I think Ima thinkin like Bob for now cuz what you describe makes me think (wired wrong) the following: Sounds like the ignition switch is being fed voltage as it should cuz of that discharge when its turned on. (Id expect 3 amps or a lil more) HOWEVER if the lights work but turning them on doesnt cause the ammeter to show discharge THE LIGHT SWITCH ISNT BEING FED FROM WHERE IT SHOULD BE ????? It may well be (if its miswired at ammeter like Bob mentioned) fed off the wrong side of the ammeter. The supply side of the ammeter should only have one wire to the battery or starter switch while its other load side wires to the BAT terminal on a 3 pole Voltage Regulator PLUS feeds hot batetry voltage to lights n ignitiion switches UNLESS its a 4 pole VR in which case they are fed from the extra 4th LOAD VR terminal IFFFFF F the lights are fed from the same ammeter terminal that wires to the battery instead of over on the correct load side (that wires to BAT on VR) they will work but NOT register on the ammeter. Sooooo ooo you gotta first get her wired per Bobs diagrams,,,,, ,,,then Polarize the genny just in case,,,,, ,,then see if she charges and if working through his flow chart dont disgnose the non chargign problem I have a long winded troubleshooting procedure to try next, heres a shortened version in the meantime to see if its a VR or a genny problem MAKE SURE THE GENNY N VR BOTH HAVE GOOD GROUNDS FIRST. TO DETERMINE IF ITS A GEN OR VR OR CUTOUT RELAY PROBLEM 5. a) VOLTAGE REGULATOR SYSTEM: With the tractor running, temporarily ground the Gens Field post to case. If she charges then but NOT otherwise, the VR may be bad, or a wires missing from VR's Field post to the Field terminal on the VR, or the VR isn’t well grounded. 6. If she still don’t charge, leave the Field grounded and jump a wire across from the VR or Cutout Relays BAT terminal over to its GEN terminal (jump by passes the cutout relay) and see if she charges. If then but not otherwise, a VR's cutout relay isn’t working correct (maybe points burned/carboned) or a Cutout Relays NOT working or not wired correct. 7. With the 2 steps above, you have basically by passed the VR or Cutout relays functions, so if she still don’t charge, you're left with a bad battery or wiring or the Gen itself. John T
