Hi,

I switched my 1943 H to 12 volts longer ago. I live in Minnesota, and the weather is very cold and my battery won't crank over my H very well. I'd like to get a new battery that will crank it over better. What is a good 12 volt battery to use that will fit in the H's battery box? The box is under the fuel tank. I'm looking for a part number so I can get one, I'll probably get a NAPA, Exide, Die Hard, Interstate or Dura Hard battery. Right now I have a Ever-Start 26-5N battery from Wal-Mart and they are JUNK. What is a good battery to use?

Thank you!!

Andy.

I have a Cheap battery and it has lasted a while. I have gone to COSTCO for batteries for my "72 chevy cheyenne, they aren"t cheap as far as cost goes and they have a wide selection. You can also get them with super high cold cranking amps. If you wanted to buy your last battery for your tractor buy an Optima battery if it fits. They are expensive but they are shock proof, drop proof, and have a big warranty.

Quit cussing the battery as your srarter is probably junk. I know of a 135engine with head machined 125 off hi -dome pistons running 150lbs compression and starts it with lawnmower battery. WALL mart batts aren junk as the other post says only few batt makers. Tons of people have a weak part in their starting system and jump on a 12v system and then find out later there were weak links somewhere or it would have started on 6v just stop and think when these tractors were new we used them year around and they did well on the 6v system.

group 26 is pretty much it for fitting in an H battery box. the original was a group 1, and being an enclosed box, group 26 (indicated by the 26 in the WM #) is about the only 12v with the right dimensions, length width & height. for best fitment and performance, avoid multi-terminal/combo/universal models, as the extra terminals can interfere or make unwanted shorts when installed.

as far as battery quality, there are only 3 battery manufacturers in the USA, and that means what you/we are getting from various brand labels could very well be made in the same factory. You still get what you pay for, you just have to be proactive to find the best value on the same product and paying more for a better warranty and knowledeable customer service usually is worth it. Hint: never say it's for a tractor, if the battery also fits auto applications. Order it by group size, and if you need to, find out what car it would be found in, so that you can get the longest warranty period. and never let a battery go dead and freeze, that voids any warranty it would have had. also, ask for a battery with the newest date code at purchase.

as for CCA rating, if you research original CCA ratings in 6 or 12v applications, they are quite low, even compared to the economy line of batteries available today. better parts stores' catalogs usually show those ratings alongside those of suggested replacement batteries--even for farm equipment.

frequent battery failure is never the battery. it's going to be very basic, such as a bad connection or bare wire, possibly a bad regulator. the first time a battery goes dead, especially a recent purchase, charge it then have it tested. if it passes, start diagnosing the electrical system.
if you have bolt-together battery cable ends, THROW THEM AWAY, they say "emergency repair" on the package for a reason. BTDT--didnt find that problem until after killing a pair of 6v in series when the new replacement batteries wouldn't even click the solenoid on our big diesel. also make sure your metal box cover is not making contact with the battery posts. if you see 2 circular rust spatter patterns (especially visible if the rest of the cover is painted at all) right where the posts are, it's making contact and draining the battery. another BTDT.

if my hints do not apply to you, try testing for shorts and drains using methods others have posted now or in the archives

ps if you are near st cloud mn maybe i can be of more assistance, as i work in an auto parts store with decent access to ag parts.

I use Walmarts best batteries in everything some are 6 years old. Even have one in the garden tractor that 6 years old. You need to check for a battery drain. You can install a master switch in the ground leg of the battery cable, this will
isolate the battery from ground. The military has used these for years on their vehicles. Hal

Your battery should last longer than 2 or 3 months - even the cheap ones. If you used a single wire alternator for your conversion it will draw from the battery even when the ignition switch is off. Some are worse than others. If this is your problem and the alternator is drawing down the battery, you can fix it by using a float charger (I"ve seen them calle battery keepers also). They are inexpensive and will keep your battery charged even if you don"t use it for months.

Don't have a part number for you, all I would do is measure the inside of the box and go to the store with your tape and find the biggest one that will fit. Are you sure the battery is your problem? By what you describe it could be almost any part of your starting circuit. How big are your battery cables and how old are they? Good luck, tractorsam

Thanks Sam. I will measure my battery and get one from L&M Fleet or NAPA.

I once bought the Ever-Start 26-5N battery from Wal Mart for $29.86, it only lasted 2 months, so I returned it and got a different one, lasted for a short time, warranty was over for that battery so I bought another one and it went bad and won't hold charge anymore. The battery cables and wiring on the tractor is new. The tractor is wired correctly.

Thanks,
Andy.

You don't get much anywhere for $29.86. I have had several WM batteries with no complaints. Mine die from lack of use. Regardless of brand buy the one with the highest cold cranking amps you can find. At Wal Mart that is $50-$60, haven't priced one lately.

Just out of curiosity, are you getting 13.1 volts steady to the battery terminals when the tractor is running?

I've used WalMart batteries before, never had that kind of problem on my tractors. However, I have a neighbor who owns a 350 converted to alternator, and can't keep a battery working in it. Turns out the alternator regulator is shot, and the voltage would fluctuate, badly enough that it's what probably damaged the battery.

If a digital volt ohm meter shows problems (anything other than 13 volts steady) at the battery when the tractor is running, then I'd try opening the alternator and replace the regulator. If its a Delco, you can get a rebuild kit at any auto supply store.

Just my .02, for what its worth.

You should be getting around 14.0 to 14.5 volts at the battery with engine at 3/4 throttle. Hal
