Haven't been posting too long. Recently read the requests for courtesy when using this site. I have been extremely impressed by the helpfulness of people who write in with answers to questions. Have received a couple of good tips myself, already. I can remember only one answer that was uncalled for. A fellow new to old tractors asked a question that could only be answered by having the appropriate manuals, parts books, etc., which he did NOT have. One of the answers said something like, "you just want somebody else to do your work for you." I was shocked, because even though I grew up around and used certain tractors (mostly red), there are dozens of other tractors that I know a little about, but certainly not much overall. If we used the old stuff for 10 or 20 or 30 years, then of course we know quite a bit about them, but if we are new to the use or collecting of these oldtimers, we have to expect a certain amount of "iggorance," as my dad's hired man used to say. No doubt any one of us COULD find answers to almost any question, if we had time and knew where to look, but it is wonderful when other people know these things right now, and just as wonderful that they are willing to help out. Hats off to all the folks who help by sharing their knowledge.

Len:

I think your comments are right on target.

As for the replies, forum contributors seem to appreciate it when those asking questions make an effort to do their homework and eliminate the easy/obvious solutions before posting.

When I need help, I do the following in order:

- Look at the tractor and try to figure it out myself.

- Look at the service, parts, and operator's manuals.

- At this point, I would ask my local friends. But since I don't know anyone around here who knows tractors better than I (and that's awfully scary!), I can't.

- At this point, I would call my local dealer for advice. Unfortunately, he's a moron, so there's no use in trying that. :-(

- Look at the tractor again and try to figure it out myself.

- Check the archives on the YT site to see if my question's been answered sometime in the past.

- Post a question on the forum. When posting, I:

1 - Use a descriptive subject; for example, "Source for 300 Utility Dipstick Felt Washer" instead of "Water Pump" or "Super C."

2 - Use standard English. (Not only for efficient communications, but also out of courtesy to the readers.)

3 - Thank those who help and who tried, either before the fact or afterward.

It's worked well so far. It's easy to save a lot of time, money, and aggravation -- and learn a lot -- by using the forum.

The only time I remember getting a bit testy was with Sonny Day/Dey. I was pounced on by a few who hadn't had the pleasure yet of his seeing his post. He liked to have us at each other, while he sat back and laughed. I even defended him before I knew what was going on. Made me feel like a fool.Seems to me one can find out almost anything he needs to know here.

Len: I quite often recommend people buy a manual, just a plain old reprint operator's manual. Then if your guiding him through some task, it makes things so much easier if he can refer to the printed word. The operator's manuals contain daily operational adjustments, lubrication charts, wiring diagram, etc. Plain and simple he's going to get better information if he has a manual. Sometimes buying that manual is the best advice we can give, and perhaps a wee bit more often than sometimes.

I realize repeat questions are a bit hard to deal with. Probably the most of us are not the fastest typers in the world, thus answering question does take a bit of time, then have to repeat it two days later, while the last thread is still on the 12-15 pages of exposed discussion. It can try ones patience.

On the other side of this, we have a few folks come here, they never read discussion, current or old, never even look at the YT menu, then boldly anounce, "I'M HERE, ANSWER MY QUESTIONS". Deep down inside you know they're too damn lazy to even read enough to figure out if John Doe's question might have been exactly same as theirs.

I've been around here close to 8 years. When I first came a vast number of folks would start their post by apologizing for it being so long, yet didn't give enough information to get a good answer. I along with a few others, got heavily on the cases of those folks, pointing out to them, smetimes it just takes those few extra words to describe the problem. I'm happy to report, that problem is much improved over 8 years ago. Very rarely anymore do you see guys start a thread by apologizing.

So you see Len, we are improving, this works because we are a group with common interests. I'll bet if we had an English grammer specialist come in here and test us yearly, we are improving, and as a group, we are much better communicators than we were 5 years ago.

I will usually answer the question, unless it is too complex, then tell the guy that he should buy the manuals -- I think many people don't realize that those manuals are readily available. There are a few people that simply don't want to look anything up, and indeed, like Wardner says, want all their research done for them. Those I simply ignore.

I do the same thing. I have learned that there are some posters that I don't even bother to read. Some individuals think that this is there personal chat board so it is my privilege to ignore them. There are many on this board that I would "bet the farm" on that they know what they are talking about. Many I would consider it a privilege to meet in person. A great discussion board. Randy

The average answer you get on this site will be pretty good advice. I had one guy practically call me a liar because hr thought my answer was wrong. I finaaly just agreed with him and concidered the source. As a whole this sight has the best information on old tractors there is.

I do that every once in a while. Some lazy dude will ask for a telephone number of a dealer. Why does he bother to post such a request when he could simply type the business name into a Google search box and have it instantaneously? It would be quicker with less work.

It bothers me that he thinks I, and others, might actually do his research for him. It also annoys me that he displaced one decent topic off the first page.

One of my responces to such a request was to ask whether his mother still wipes his butt. I am not going to apoligise for that remark.

I'll give you another pet peeve but I don't expect to see any improvement in this regard.

Why can't forum members use paragraphs? It makes reading alot easier. We all make grammatical errors and I have a few misspellings in my previous post. My misspellings are flagged by my computer. After four or five attempts to remove the error (apoligise) with no success, I just give up. But paragraphs are so easy to create.

I think that you have this board pretty well pegged. There are an outstanding number of "experts" that are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Occasionally there is a response that comes across in the "wrong frame of mind". Those individuals are usually "brought to task" for their attitude/response. It only takes one rotten apple to spoil the whole barrel. There are many questions that are asked and answered more than once, mostly by newcomers that don't know who to search the archives. But they keep getting answered and will probably keep getting answered in the future. I have never written anything on this discussion board that I have been ashamed of later and my email is always uncovered if anybody wants to visit with me one-on-one about anything. A great group of individuals on this board. Randy
