I'm looking at a 1966 Scout tomarrow and have a few questions before I head out. This thing has an "odd" shaped top - they call it a "sportop" (spelled that way). Anything special or to avoid there? It has the 196 4 cylinder and a three speed - how good or bad is this?

What other tire/wheels from other manufacturers will interchange with these?

I know rust is a major problem on these - is there a specific spot to check on the bottem? (body actually looks pretty good).

Do the tops interchange with other Scouts of similar years?

I was told that some of the old scouts had a 4 speed with a synchronized lst gear that rock climbers and other 4 wheelers love. If it has this, if nothing else it might worth it to part out. Lee

A much better unit is a pre-88 Samurai hardtop. They go anywhere, 20 mpg and weigh just 2300 lounds. Will do everything a 4 wheeler will do plus you have CAH! And they are 1/4 the price.

there was a famous dragracer that ran one way back when he was the supervisor at the fort wayne IH dyno lab his name was john lingenfeltter,he died a few years back from a car accident while testing, he also went on to build a big racing company that survifes today, it was one of the scouts with the optional turbo-charger on it. if i remember right it ran in the T/stock class and ran some were in the low 14,s and hi 13,s.

I believe the sport top is a one piece fiber glass top,comes off easy. The windshield is fixed.That,s the way mine was.In the late 60's I traded a SC with a 2pt blade and IH loader for one with a snow blade, 26000 miles, straight across.It was the half V8, between me and the kids it got the wheels run off it for several years.when the fenders rusted off,we put a water tank on it and kept around the farm.

That 4 cylinder should be pretty tough. Basically the 196 slant 4 is half of a 392 V8.
There should be 3 levers on the floor, the shift lever for the 3 spd, the lever for the high and low range, and the lever to shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive. I will assume that one of the major rust areas is the same as on the pick-up trucks. The front inner fenders where the hood hinges attach. Reproduction body parts are probably available.

I drove them alot when I was 18 in 1966. We had a 300 gal water tank in the pickup bed and booms on the front bumper. We even put 6" hub extensions to fit the corn rows. We ran the daylights out of them-plowed fields at 5 mph and spraying at 7mph over all terraine; forded streams to the back fields up to 30 inches deep. That engine and trans, etc took all we good give it. The spindles took a beating with the extensions. I think I remember a high and low range. Not very fast on road but we produced in the fields. We only had tin between us and outside-no insulation/anything but noise kept us awake on 20 hour days. BUy it and have lots of fun. I wish I had one and I'd put a plow on it. They did make 8 cyl, but that 4 cyl wa very tough- just not highway speeds..

I know they have I4s, I6s and V8s and would rather get a I6 instead of a I4 or V8 but this one appears to be priced right (asking $800 and claims it runs good but needs new wheel cylinders). The tires/rims look like 14" car tires and I'd want to put 235/75/15s on it for getting around and looks. Are you familar with the "Sportop"? Does the front windsheild fold down on a 66 model - vacuum powered wipers?

Wasn't that sport top Plastic?? If switching tops you might need the windshield & frame too. 14 in wheels might be 59 Lincolns. If so Ford pickup wheels should fit if the center hole is correct size. Check the gearing. Some had 4.27 gears, not great for speed. check for rust in the foot well area. There is an X shaped brace that likes to rust away. Check where the body mounts to frame in the foot well area too. Likes to rust and cab settles. You can figure this out by looking where the front shocks mount , there is a hole about 1 1/2 inch thru the inner fender so you can get a socket on the shock bolt. If the hole does not line up with the nut the cab has settled down . Been a long time and memory is fuzzy on some of this stuff. The 196 is a tough engine . Lots more power than the 152 according to some. I like the AMC 6 cyl. option myself. I am thinking in 66 the drive thru the made some 90 degree bends and the idler gear with needle bearings wear out much faster than the later models where the power was transmitted in a straight line from the trans mainshaft to the rear diff. Providing you were not in 4 wheel drive all the time.

We had one like you describe with an Auburn trencher mounted in the box, so it did not get driven on the road much, but it was a real good unit.

That slant 4 cylinder should be an OK engine. I had a 1965 with a 152cu in (half of a 304V8) it wasn't fast, but in 4 WD, it was nearly unstopable. The body rusted pretty badly, but I never had engine troubles.

The little 196 in line 4 is one power house of an engine. I had one in a 1959, I think that was the year of it pick up and that thing wouldn't go fast but if it had tracktion it would pull any thing.
