I rencently aquired a 1947 Farmall A . It doesn't run good and after checking carb, points, and plugs didn't help with running problem I checked compression and got a pretty even 60 to 70 psi I squirted oil in the cylinders and compression increased very little on a couple of cylinders around 70 to 78 psi. I am thinking valves. So I jump to conclusion and start pulling head. After I get head off I poured kerosene in the ports of intake and exhaust valves, not a drop leaked by any valve. also very little ridge at top of cylinder so now I am wondering what might be causing my low compression. Also how do I know if it is a distillate engine? it has a 3 inch bore with what I will call a cutaway dish in the pistons.

Thanks to all who posted an answer to my questions. I believe I will put in new rings since I have it partially diasembled. Also will try to post some pictures if I can figure out how to do it.

The dished out pistons are for the distillate fuel so your compression was ok for that engine. Like other post says mite be ok to put new rings in at this time.

They are low compression engines with 70 to 80 being kinda normal. Sense it is down now I would clean the grooves well and put new rings on the pistons. Ridge ream the cylinders, and glaze break them with 400 grit. Put it back together with new gaskets and run it. JimN

The compression sounds pretty good to me. Sounds more like you might need a good tune up, points, condensor, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, etc. The tractor is 60 years old probably needs a little attention.
