Bought a nice straight Farmall A yesterday, the emblem is mostly missing on the hood. The serial number is located on the left side of the clutch housing. Two numbers are present; 1451 J and below that is: 1575....thats all I see.

Thanks in advance for your input!

If your tractor (ser#1451) looks like a Super A it should be either a 1954 100 or a 1957 130. If it has a flat grill it should be a 1958 140.

arnett: City Boy and George are the only two that have it right. Farmall A had a 4 digit serial number, but it was not on the clutch housing, nor did it have hydraulics, nor did it have a rockford clutch, besides it probably happened in 1939.

Super A all had 6 digit serial numbers and only the last 1,957 had it on the clutch housing.

So your tractor is either a 100, 130 or 140. With serial number 1451 a 100 would have code Z, 130 would have code C and 140 would have code D Another clue would be engine block part number 100 is 354898 R2 or R3, 130 is 366204 R1 and 140 is 367825 R1.

Hugh, I see I did give 55 casting code instead of 54. I forgot the 100 came out in 54. I was thinking 55 as the SA was made in 54 as well.

Mike is right, you either have a 100 or newer. Could be that it has had a newer bell housing put on. Check the engine number to see what it has on it. The 1575 is rated engine speed. If it is a 100 it will have A casting codes with that serial number. The codes will look like this and be on all major castings.Engine block, bell housing, etc. 6*21*A Looks like a smal tag with screws between the numbers and letters. The J means it has the Rockford clutch and has nothing to do with year model.

If the serial number plate is on the clutch housing it is either a very, very, very late Super A (Super A-1), or it is a 100, 130, 140. All but the very late super A's had the serial number plate on the inside of the left seat upright (under the seat). mike durhan

Look behind the fan behind the distributor. If it is an A, the serial number will be stamped into the side of the block and will be followed by a letter indicating the year of manufacture.

Re: Farmall A or Super A? in reply to georgeky, 12-14-2007 12:57:17
The most obvious difference is that a Super A will have a hydraulic block under the gas tank.

Serial numbers for an A are 501-250000

Serial numbers for a Super A are 250001 and higher.

You have a very early Farmall A if that serial number is is not partially worn off. 1451J means that it is serial number 1451 (the 1040th Farmall A or B made), and the J means it has a Rockford clutch.
1575 is the rated engine RPM.

The tractor does have full hydraulics/block below the tank. Yes the serial plate isn't in great shape, the numbers that I mentioned is all that are clearly visible. So I guess this is a Super A since it has hydraulics below the tank, huge block as well, which I suspect is the reservoir?

I'm trying to identify the correct model of this tractor, my first message above was cut short.

The A generally did not have hydraulics. The lift was limited to either manual or an exhaust lift unless someone added an aftermarket lift running off the fly wheel or the pto. All super A's had hydraulic lifts with rocker arms under the gas tank.
