I finally started the M this morning. It had been sitting for about 4 weeks and had been running good. It is about 20 degrees out today. I started it and the needle on the oil pressure guauge did not come up so I shut it down. It seemed to run fine. Could it be a faulty gauge?

I had a 79 Chev van with a mechanical oil pressure gage. When very cold, -15 or colder, it did not register for at least a minute upon starting.

If I remember correctly, There is a loop in our MTA 's oil pressure line which goes from the engine fitting to the gage. This line probably has some water in the low part of the loop. If heating the gage or loop restores oil pressure, take the line off & see if there is water in it.

Loosen the oil pressure connector at the engine. If you start it briefly and oil comes out of the fitting from pressure, then AndrewZ may be perfectly correct. If none comes out within about 15 seconds, I would probably pull the oil pan and check the pump and drive gear. There are many posts on oil pump repair in the "search for" archives above. If it does send oil out the fitting when it is loose, retighten it and use a hair dryer on the tube to the gauge. Loosen the fitting at the gauge and run the engine when it is it is warm, the moisture will be pushed out. Re tighten and see if it makes pressure. If not, try a good known gauge at the block fitting to assure your pressure. JimN

Sounds like you have ice in the gauge. Iv had it happen to me on several occasions. use a heater of some type, a heat gun is best and thaw it out. Then give it a try.

Since it was cold, there might be ice in the engine somewhere. Try running it in warmer weather if possible and see if you still have no oil pressure. If it has oil pressure in the warmer weather, warm up the engine and change the engine oil and filter. Also make sure you are using a good winter engine oil. Don't run it with no pressure or you will damage the engine.
