Well, I went ahead and took my entire wiring system off my H and started fresh. I priced a cutout from NAPA and nearly had a heart attack... $90. ouch! I bought a solid state one from a local gen/starter rebuild shop for about $20. It's rated at 25 amps and says it will work on 6, 12, or 24 v. systems, and as an experiment, I can live w/ $20 vs $90.. Anyway, I also disassembled the switch and checked all the contacts and all seems good. I rewired everthing according to a wiring diagram I got on this forum, and it seems to work fine, except the charge rate isn't what I would call great. The battery is weak right now, and barely turns the motor over. Would a bad cell, or some other battery malady cause the poor charging rate? It shows virtually no charge on LOW, and only about 7 amps on HIGH charge. Am I overlooking something? I attached a direct ground from the ground side of the field resistor on the switch to insure a good ground, and did the field to ground bypass test, which would slightly increase the charge rate when the switch is on L and makes no difference when the switch is on H... which I suspect is exactly how it should be. I'm gonna put the battery on the trickle charger tonight and see what the morning brings.

sgt, Im pretty well agreeing with my friends, Ima thinkin the genny is getting weak and/or your battery is showing its age EITHER of which can cause this. Once the genny has a good ground and a tight belt and you dead ground its FLD post THATS ALL SHE HAS INTO THAT BATTERY.

You may wanna run a direct ground wire from the battery post down to the genny n see what happens!!!!! !!!!! !!

If the battery is okay????? ?? and the grounds n wiring are all good n the field is dead grounded n shes still a weak charger..... ..youre left with a genny problem and/or you may get a lil more charge if its an adjustable 3 brush genny, try that next..... ..... ..

As far as the genny its brushes may be worn or the commutator is all carboned n oiled over or the brush hold downs are weak or stuck

DID I MENTION THE BATTERY MAT BE THE PROBLEM LOL

Merry Christmas

Another possibility is a poor ground between the light switch, the switch box and the steering post.

Temporarily jumper the generator F terminal to a good ground. Now set the light switch to the high charge (H) position then the engine at full RPM and . If the ammeter reading has increased problem is a bad ground at the switch box.

However if there's no change I'd be suspecting either a tired generator, or a failing battery like Andy suggests.

The third brush (on some generators) is adjustable. Putting it closer to the fixed brush on that side increases the output. If it is already there, it is all she has. Clean it up, have good brushes in it with good spring tension, and lubed bearings. Adjust the belt so it does not slip, but is not overly tight. !/2" deflection with a thumb pushing on the mid point between pulleys. JimN

You can increse or decrease the output of that generator by playing with the "third" brush. I won't go into the details of it right now, but if you need more info, I'll be back.

You need a good battery in order to get good charge.
