We have a 1086 IH and Plan On Changing It From Two Wheel Drive To MFWD Using A Coleman Or Elwood Transfer Case, Or If any one has a better suggestion? I do not know how common these units were, but if any one could give me a lead as where I might find them I also need front differential and house hard ware.

Dad's been actively looking for one for his 1066 since 1980. He even bought one during a really wet fall in the mid-'80s, but it turned out to be geared totally wrong for the 1066, and required 18.4x28 tires in the front (HUGE!). That would've dropped the drawbar by 6", totally counterproductive in a situation where underbelly clearance is nearly as important as traction (the mud had a bottom most places).

He bought a 5240 Maxxum with MFWD about 5 years ago, and uses it to chop corn when it gets too wet. It's amazing how much difference the MFWD makes. That 5240 is about 50HP and 3 tons shy of the 1066, but it'll pull the chopper and loaded wagon throuh places that the 1066 couldn't.

Good luck finding one now.

I have not put a price to the total project cost yet, because I have no Idea what the component were going to cost me. You Are the first to respond with parts for sale! But I would like to hear what you would be willing to sell for.
Thank You, for responding so quickly, Dennis

I had one with a Elwood axle.

They are Ok for field work.

But for road travel and tight working conditions they aren't as good.

You are not to exceed about 14 MPH or they get to vibrating and shake things apart in even in 2 wheel drive.

Long story short I traded mine cause of minor repair needed all the time.

Mine had an electric over hydraulic clutch to engage and gave me a few problems. And cause of the sharp angle of the drive shaft, bearing were a problem also.

I have neighbor that took one off his 1086 was working good he got a bigger tractor and didn"tneed it anymore. He round bails with the 10 and it will turn shorter on the ends without the front asist.

DLJ: Good idea, however those drive units are scarce as hens teeth, and most of the units that are around are in quite bad shape. Parts have to be another concern.

I'm thinking you'll buy a newer tractor fully equiped with MFWD for less money. Used big tractors sell quite reasonable these days. Besides if it's drawbar horse power you want look articulated, one may as well have both drive axles heavy.
