Hi, been shopping for a w-6 or w-9 and ran across some diesels. Don't know much about reliability or being able to find parts for diesel pumps or injectors or are they pretty reliable. Should I stay away from bring home trouble, thanks joe

The gas start Diesel run engines are reliable if treated to cool down and shutoff procedures that keep the heads from cracking. They are pretty efficient, and do well. Most are at the same power point as the Gas engine in the same tractor, or just a bit under) if not twisted up any. They use 1/3 less fuel compared to gasoline. Parts can be purchased, they are not cheap. Good running tractors will keep doing so if treated well. They have a bit less flexibility than a Farmall in the same engine class, unless power steering they can be a bear. The seating position is either great and fits well, or is hated. The WD9 is a serious tractor and is designed for heavy drawbar tillage apps. The 6 a bit less, but in that same purpose category. I hope this helps, They seem to have values at 75 to 80% of the same size Farmall. JimN

But there is no "same size" Farmall as the WD-9! I have many hours running WD-9s and WDR-9s, all without power steering, and I didn"t find them hard to steer.

Power wise, there are several later tractors, (though different engines) with similar power in Farmall.
My brothers I-9 is fine for heavy work in a pretty straight line. Not handy for backing 4 wheel auto steer wagons up to a barn. (I do like them, they are just not "handy". JimN

Hi Jim, It takes at least a 706 to keep up to a WD9, but the 9 will pull the same load on 2 and 1/2 gallons that a 706 gas will take 5 or 6. I have put about 10,000 hours on a WD9, I can back wagons quite well. Merry Christmas, Chuck

I don't know much about the diesels, but I do know that finding parts for a W-9 can be expensive, especially a diesel. The W-6 is pretty much a standard version of a M Farmall.

Hope it helps!

Merry Christmas
