I remember my uncle had a hay grapple on the front of his narrow-front H to load/unload loose hay. As I remember it, it used the old one way hydraulics and fit on the very front of the H. It always looked like a very top-heavy and front-heavy thing, but he "balanced" it with tire chains. Was it made by IH? Are there any pictures of it? Thanks and Merry Christmas.

BRM,

It's almost impossible to say what someone else used. There were/are lots of loader manufacturers that made implements for handling loose hay.

Pretty safe bet to say it wasn't IH tho. Also, really doubt if it used the H's hydraulics either. Just not enough "umph" and they weren't 2-way. Most used a PTO driven pump, which worked fine with the exception that they weren't "live".

Did it look like any of these? First black/white picture is of an early Farmhand from the 40s. They didn't have the grapple head tho; that didn't start happening until sometime in the mid 50s.

Second picture is of my H with the smaller F-11 Farmhand, which I keep around for a spare loader to feed with.

There were thousands of the later Farmhand F-10s mounted on Hs in this area(third picture).

Dunno,

Allan

Thanks Alan (from my home state), but nope it didn't look anything like a Farmhand. I'm pretty darn sure it sat into a couple of U shaped brackets which mounted on the front bolster and that it used the one way hydraulics. It really wasn't too great, but it did move some stacked hay. My dad later had an American with a grapple much like the second picture. That was on his M. We didn't stack much hay with the sweep head on that before we bought a Schwartz wide front because the M was pretty tippy with the sweep head on it and the two narrow tires in front. After adding the wide front, the "fun" was the amount of muscle it took to turn those tires in making a turn! Thanks again. kelly

Here's a picture of a F-10 Farmhand on a H set up and ready to stack hay. Very common sight "here" years ago.
