Hello All!
First off, Merry Christmas to everyone!

Secondly, while home with the family I was hoping to take care of some minor issues with my M, and another pretty major one came up, which is that it wouldnt start. I replaced a bad cable end, and also put the battery on a charger. After nothing, I had the battery tested (its still good) and checked my switches and wires, all is well.

I finally pulled the starter off the tractor and pulled things apart. It turns out that one of the leads that connects to the positive "post" in the starter casing burned up, and is no longer connected. It looks like I have to replace that post, as well as the connection to it from the coil.
So I have a few questions for any of you out there who have had the chance to work on these starters before. Where is the best place to get the parts Im going to need? I have the list with the Delco-Remy numbers (from the IH parts book) and Ill head to my NAPA tomorrow in the morning. But should I look somewhere else?
Also, only one of the connections is bad in the starter casing, but it appears that all four of the coils that are attached to the casing are joined together. Do I need to change all 4 out? How would I do that if they are all connected?
Should I look to change anything else out while I have it apart? (The brushes are all in pretty good shape, and Ill polish up the armature while Im at it)
Thanks in advance!

~Bug

Just a quick update for anyone who was following along with this thread...

So after figuring out that I need to rebuild my starter....AND replace the bad solenoid....AND re-charge my battery... the M still wouldnt start. It would crank over, but not fire.

I re-tightened all my wires, checked my connections from the coils, and tried to figure out what happened. Then I pulled the drain plug on the carb and got all sorts of crap out of it, including what looked like a giant paint flake. Further inspection reveals that the inlet screen on the carb is long gone, so stuff could just hang out in the bowl.

I flushed that all out, and she fired right up! She purred like a kitten after sitting out in the cold all these months. I had to run it with the choke all the way out the whole time, but its a big step up from nothing at all.

Thanks again for all of your help everyone! Its much appreciated. Happy New Year to All!

Hi Bill.

When I was looking for parts for the starter, my local NAPA had a few things that they could get, and Im not sure if the springs were on that list or not. I know they had the brushes and a few other things.
But if they dont have it, Im not sure where to tell you to go, unless there is a starter rebuilder somewhere local to you that might have those springs for you.

I too am working on the starter for a Farmall H. I noticed that the spring tension is low on one of the brushes. Any ideas where to get a replacement spring? Rebuilders must have sources for this item. Cranking motor number is 1107448.

Thanks,
Bill (Northern Ca)

Gene and Josh, I wish I had gotten ahold of you fellahs before yesterday!

I dropped my starter off at the NAPA already after exhausting my "in-person" options around my folks house. They have sent it out to a rebuilder, and Im waiting to hear back on what its going to set me back... Cant say Im looking forward to hearing that number.
If it doesnt work out, Ill be sure to let you know! Thanks for the offers/information!

I have had starters on both my H and my 300U rebuilt. Not cheap $100 + but very happy with results.

Thanks for the info Bill.

I stopped in at several different parts shops, NAPA was the only one that had anything at all. They only sell the bushings and brushes, the rest isnt available. But they do offer a rebuild service, so Im going to take it in and see how much its going to set me back to get it rebuilt. I would much rather do it on my own, but I dont see how thats supposed to happen if I cant find the parts anywhere.
Thanks again!

I had the same problem with a starter on an 880 oliver. (Sorry to mix green in the red forum) I had the local auto parts store cross reference the starter case number (windings and brushes) with their book and turned out a delco starter for a car had the same motor with a different drive so to save time in the rebuild shop (was told a week minimum) I swapped the outer case and its been working great. Only cost about 35 bucks too. If the rest of your starter is good you maybe can do the same thing.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

Ill ask at the NAPA about parts, and if they know of any rebuilders in the area. I cant think of a place here in town offhand that would actually work on fixing my starter.
Also, when I have the shaft out of the case where the coils sit, should there be any play? The shaft is still in the nose, and I can move that along the length of the shaft at least 1/16", maybe 1/8". Is this normal?

napa will prolly have or be able to get everything you need. there is a new style bendix available for that starter, you may have to get that from case i-h. while your in there check the bushings on either end of the starter. when they get wore, it makes the starter draw a lot more amps .napa can get em hey are pretty easy to change. the one in the nose you can drive right out. the one on the back side is a little trickier to get out. i used a pilot bearing puller to get mine out. you could always go in with a small punch or chisel and fold it in a little to grip it with vice grips and pull it out.

You can fix it yourself, but I prefer to take starters and generators to a repair shop for anything more than replacing brushes. They have the parts, and will only charge an hours labor or so.
