966 that smokes

Just bought a 966. It starts very good in cold weather so I think the engine is good but it smokes and misses like crazy. It cleans up only after it gets to operating temp. I know some of this is normal for a cold diesel but our other IH"s don"t do this near as much. I think it needs injectors. Your opinion would be appreciated.

Has it been on a dyno?
Pretty good chance it is running close to 120 hp and at that it will smoke and skip a bit when started in the cold weather.
Just about every 966 I have seen acts the same way as do the 2 1066s I have,both of which are "turned up",one with a DT466 and the other still a DT414.
Your 966 will be worse yet without the turbo so don`t be too concerned if there isn`t anything else indicating a problem.

This is a dumb question, but will that dextron trick work with any ih diesel, like the 3&4 cylinders or just that particular engines injectors?

I dunno what there is about that stuff; I learned the trick from the truckers. Guess they have been using it since back the 50s to clean up carbon deposits.

I used it a lot on GM diesels and it acts as truly a "Tune up in a can" with those old clunkers. Can't tell ya if it is actually cleaning the injector or the valves. All I know is that it works and I wouldn't be afraid to put it in any diesel. Mix is a quart to about 40 gallon or so.

Another trick for gas engines:

I use either a can of GM's Top Engine Cleaner or a 50-50 mixture of anti-freeze and water fed slowly thru the carb after the engine is hot. Kinda like the "water injection" that the RV crowd has been using for years.

I've saved so many engines from a overhaul that I've lost track of the count. It literally "steam cleans" that combustion chamber.

966 is 30+ yrs old. If she wants to smoke, thats her decision. After Dec. 31 in Illinois,no one will be allowed to smoke in public. That said, I'd check injectors and set valves.

what about putting dextron in a duramax pickup will it clean the injectors without hurting anything ????? ????? thanks

Get yourself a big red jug of "Diesel 9-1-1" from your local dealer or Tractor Supply. Mix about double the recommend amount with a full tank of fuel and put the tractor to work. That'll clean everything up real nice and smooth out the running quicker. Starting in cold winter weather, they will ALWAYS stumble and smoke a bit at first.

9-1-1 power service is for emergency use only.
as far as cleaning it will do more harm than good,it is too dry and has alcohol in it.

What happens to the injectors when they get a lot of hours on them is the opening pressure drops off. As the pressure drops they do not do as good a job of atomizing the fuel. That leads to more smoke and less power.

The down side of getting the pressure back where it should be is, if you have a weak pump you may find the the engine will be harder to start because the pump has to work harder to open the injectors.

Ran a 966 for a friend for a couple of years, that tractor was in A-1 condition and always missed for a minute or so when I fired it up, smoke would clear after maybe 5 minutes or so.

How many hours on it?

You might try running a quart of Dextron thru the fuel. Sure cleans the injectors.

I've got a brand new motor in mine and it'll phart and miss for a couple of minutes when started cold. Think they all do.

Mix it with a "full" tank of fuel.

It really does a number on "dirty" injectors. You can feel the difference within 20 minutes.
