GUYS JUST WANDERING ABOUT TAKING THE STARTER OFF OF MY 986 ? I HAVE TAKEN THE PLATE UP IN THE FLOOR OF THE CAB, IHAVE HAD TROUBLE GETTING TO THE TOP BOLT THAT HOLDS THE STARTER TO BELL HOUSING, IS THERE ANY TRICKS OF THE TRADE TO TAKE THIS STARTER OFF? IS IT INTENDED TO GET TO ALL 3 BOLTS FROM INSIDE THE CAB OR THE 2 BOTTOM BOLTS FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRACTOR? THANKS FOR ANY INFO.

If you cant get it, just loosen the two front cab nuts inside the cab and lift the front of the cab up a little.

you get to all the bolts from the top through the floor. a long extesion 3\8 works best with a wobble socket 3\4 size is what i ues the bolts can be a rreal bear to remove if it hasen't been off. you well most likly end up with a couple smashed finger and lean some new words not fit to be used in mixed company.

You are absolutely correct, changed the starter on our 1086 last year. Looked at location of the cap screws and purchased a 3/8" x 18" extension, I had the offset universal socket drive unit. It was the clear thing to remove and replace the starter. Being 71 yrs old, do hope I do not have to do this again.
