I have the new engine back in my I-4 and now I'm trying to install the clutch.

When I took it out, I left the flywheel/clutch/input shaft package on the engine as I pulled it. When I re-installed the engine, the flywheel/clutch components weren't ready yet, so I went back in with the engine less the flywheel.

Now I'm trying to put it all back in and I can't figure out how its done. The flywheel was a wrestling match to get back in place, but its in. There just doesn't seem to be enough room to get it all the rest in there even in pieces.

I thought about unbolting and sliding the engine forward, but that would require removing the radiator that took me 3 days to figure out how to get in.

These things had to be servicable in the field. Anyone know how its done?

You need to kinda assemble the clutch,pressure plate and all before you put it in and then just kinda wrestle it in place. Its been some years since I did the clutch in my I4 but I think that was how I did it.

There just wasn't enough room in there. I ended up biting the bullet, pulling the radiator, engine bolts and alignment pins, then sliding the whole engine forward in the chassis about an inch and a half. That gave just enough clearance to put all the clutch in piece by piece, them slide the engine back in place align it and bolt it back down.

Now its back to the radiator again... took me 3 days to figure out how to get to the nuts on the bottom that hold it in. On this particular machine the access holes below them are blocked.

Yea, that could be what I done as well. Havent had to do anything to mine in a few years, so my memory is somewhat lack on it. Isnt there like a big square hole below the radiator, do you have to acccces the studs from behind? Id look but whee its stored at in the barn would be kinda hard for me to see.

Theres a large hole in the casting under each stud, but this machine is actually an I-4 that has been converted to a steel wheeled road roller. The roller frame supports the nose of the I-4 chassis right under those access holes and blocks them. I had to reach in under and in front of the crank pulley to put on the pads, washers and nuts. Finding something to reach in and up to tighten them was hard too.

I have it all back together again and the clutch cover on now.
