As discussed under the BMD topic, only the Farmall B-450 was imported to the South and Texas. I have read, but never seen, that the International B-450 was offered in the UK with an optional front wheel drive. Does anybody know how this front drive axle received its power and even better, does anyone have a picture of the front drive components on a International B-450?

Harold: George was able to find a rear photo, showing the 3 point hitch, and sent me a copy. Nice unit, and to think I put up with that contraption called fast hitch on the back of my 560. They had that 3 point hitch on British Farmalls, before IH in America sold it's first fast hitch other than SC.

If we had been as well informed back then as we are today, fast hitch on big tractors would have hit the trash rather quickly. I always liked the SC, 200, 230 and 240 hitch, plus the single point hitch on the offsets, however a 560 doing heavy drawbar work, fast hitch was a disaster. In only about 3,000 hours my 560 hitch became so loose, it was almost like pulling a forage harvester or baler with a 4' chain. I rebuilt the pivot point holes, but they only lasted one season. In the end I cut the fast hitch up for scrap around 1968, and bought a new M type U drawbar and swinging drawbar. At that point I would have spent the money for that 3 point hitch. And believe me, I knew about Saginaw.

Hugh,

At the time we were selling Farmall B-450's I thought that the B-450 transmission top would probably bolt right up on a 560 but we never tried it. It would have required some piping and other fabrication for the lower lift arms, but I think it would have worked, as the rear end housing, shift forks and gears are basicly the same.

Harold: Whether it was a direct bolt up, would not have been a major issue to I as a farmer. I firmly believe had North American farmers been offered that B-450 hitch and drawbar, demand would have been there to make necessary modifications to fit that unit on American built Farmalls.

Generally speaking the wisdom here on YT would have you believe 560 rear end troubles were the beginning of the end of IH. I ask you how many farmers were affected by 560 rear ends, probably 50,000 at most. Buyers of 30-60 hp tractors were leaving IH in droves over fast hitch. They wanted 3 point hitch as it gave them options when buying equipment. Most of them never returned. I've always been of the belief, lack of 3 point hitch was a far greater cause of the IH down fall. Harry Ferguson had clearly won the hitch war before IH sold their first fast hitch.

And to think IH had a 3 point hitch in production is living proof, management were truly a bunch of duds. Usually one would only expect this boneheaded type of customer service from a govt agency.

The 4WD version of the International B450 used Roadless components but was sold as the International B450 4WD, and all the conversion parts carry IH part numbers, not as a Roadless like the Fordson based units. The option was also available on the 614 and 634 tractors, the equal wheel 4WD option on the 634 was produced by County. As I said on a previous post the gold painted SUPER BMD was to commemorate the corination of Her Majesty the Queen, not the 1,000th SUPER BMD as there were only 848 of these produced in 1953 which was its first year of production. Supposedly 50 tractors were commisioned to recieve the gold paint, but reports of the actual number produced vary between 30 and 50. I have a couple of pictures of the 4WD and the illistrated parts list but I can"t (dont know how to!) post them on here, but I can get them from my scanner to an e-mail, so if you want them send me a mail. Hope this helps, Richard.

Don't claim to know much about the tractors,or near as much as you do. Don't know about all the gold ones either. I didn't say Super BMD on the 1000 tractor painted gold. Do have a picture of a BMD with a sign behind it saying the 1000 BM diesel tractor Doncaster works, painted gold. Didn't they start making BMD tractors in 1952, or do I have wrong information?

Yep, I found a photo my self, 4 chaps looking very pleased with themselves by a gold painted BMD. The 1,000 BMD was made in 1953, it's final year of production, but the Super BMD started production in that year with 848 tractors produced, and the batch of Corination gold tractors were Super BMDs, the 1,000th tractor is something different again, a one - off, and not one of the batch of 50 or so produced the same year. That tractor would be a very rare find to-day.

Hi Richard, how are things across the pond?. If you don't mind, I would like a pic or two of the gold tractors. I think I will hunt up a B-450 for myself. I like the looks and the idea of the factory 3 point.

Thanks, georgeky.

B 450-I front drive was from left side of transmission in 1964 and the front axle was built in conjuction with Roadless Traction co. Supposely the 1000 BMD to leave Doncaster on 7-16-53 was painted gold. Interesting from the wheelbase posted below on the B450 with row crop style front its shorter than MD or SMD tractors.

Yes it was definitely fitted with FWD but I think it was retro fit by a Co called Roadless. Will post a pic if I can find one tommorrow. Will try to put it here or in Tractor Photo section MTF
