I need to know what oil to use in the following areas (don't have a repair manual yet)

engine

governor

PTO housing

I know the gearbox uses Hytran (I think I spelled that right), but how do you check it? I can't find a dipstick or sight glass anywhere. Is there a filter in the hydraulic system?

Also I still haven't found the serial number. I have been told (and read on here) that it is on the left or right side of the clutch or transmission housing. I have been all over this thing and connot find it. Where is it EXACTLY? Is it cast or stamped into the metal or is it an attached tag? I have found something that may be it on the FWD RH side of the transmission, but there is so much paint buildup I can't make anything out. I want to take some lacquer thinner to it but am afraid I may wash the printing away if it is not stamped in.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I haven't ordered a manual yet and I am trying to get this thing going before my vacation ends.

Thanks for the replies. On my tractor, there is a white cap on the governor that looks like an oil fill. Is that where the engine oil goes?

There are no tags riveted anywhere on this tractor, so I guess my serial number is long gone.third party image

tesmith: The cap on governor about 1-1/4" across is you oil filler cap. You should be able to see the little 4 hole pattern in the casting, indicating where the tag was.

tesmith: Any good engine oil, governor is lubricated from the engine. Use Hytran in the PTO unit. Your 340 should have a fill to level plug, near the clutch pedal on side of transmission, probably 35% total depth from bottom.

The serial number is on a roughly 2"x4" tag, rivited to left side of clutch housing, probably a bit above 1/2 way from bottom.

In the old days we used straight 30W in summer and straight 10W in winter here in Wisconsin. I use 10w30 diesel oil (detergent) now.Works fine for me-others surely will have different thoughts. The governor does not have seperate lubrication,it`s lubed by the crankcase oil. Depending which PTO you have: 2qt. 10W oil for planetary type, 1 pt. Hy Tran for clutch type.

You check the transmission fluid level by unscrewing a cap screw on the left side of trans. case below the footrest and somewhat hidden by the clutch pedal. You are correct in using Hy Tran in it. There is a filter on the right side of tractor -kind of a square plate down low by brake pedals. As far as serial # tag - it`s on the right side on cluth housing right next to the oil filter housing on the engine. It is a metal tag riveted to the housing. Hope this helps, Mark
