Freezing Water in front tires?

A friend had water put in the tubes of her Cub's front tires. Will freeze the next 3 nights and was wondering if they will be OK. I think yes it's OK since the rubber will expand as ice forms. Any experienced advice on this matter appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have to question the wisdom/justification of putting water in the front tires of a Cub in the first place... The amount of ballast you gain (maybe 16lbs per tire?) is hardly worth the effort compared to the headaches of dealing with fluid-filled tires. Plain old water will freeze. Calcium chloride will rust out the rims. Beet juice is tough to find. Antifreeze or windsheild washer fluid is even lighter than water.

When the amount of fluid is such that it replaces at least one set of weights, then it's worth it, IMHO.

I agree it was a bad idea. Not my idea mind you.

I said it was a bad idea months ago.

The snow blade now on the front weighs way more than the water in the tires.

Thanks to all for the knowledgeable posts. Water will stay.

Tennessee Terry says it all. If you are concerned, take off the tires, put them inside., but in reallity, that little bit if chill won't freeze them over.

They won"t freeze with low twenties for a few hours in the middle of the night.

it would take a day of two of highs in the twenties and lows at least of 22 to freeze.

leave a glass of water outside to prove it.

Did a tire shop do this for her. I would assume they should have put calcium in them. Thats what they do around here.

Better to drain them, or install antifreeze. If you leave the water in, don't move the tractor while the water is frozen, of you will at the least, need new tubes.

If it is going to freeze for the first time this season then you don't live in Chicago. There is a difference between freezing air temperature and cold enough temperature to freeze the water in the tires. They are insulated by the rubber and are sitting on warm ground. If you are talking 25 degrees or higher for a few hours the water won't freeze, or at least won't freeze enough to cause damage.

We're just north of Nawlens, and way south of Chicago. 28F tonight then 23F the next 2 nights. Fooling with the tires will cut into my watching bowl games time today. Maybe I can talk her into jacking up and removing the front tires. Then I can remove the stem internals, let them drain, and refill with air. Maybe I could finish my part during half times. I told her back in August plain water in the front tires was a bad idea. Oh well.

If you are only dealing with a couple cold night and then right back up above freezing in the morning there is nothing to worry about.

Why not jus drain the water out and put new ater in when it warms up? Is it used in the winter?

If you think about it, ice can be as sharp as glass, so it could cut and/or destroy a tube and if realy full of water, could break cords with expansion. Why not get a little antifreeze and put some in it.

They will be fine if you do not move it while frozen.

Well, I think water + antifreeze is heavier anyway so I would add some Prestone to the water. You'll have to take the tire and rim off to do this. I would not want my tires and tubes to freeze no matter what. Dave
