Got my H running after a rebuild,Runs good except it will only idle down to what used to be about 1/4 throttle.I cant find any vacuum leaks ect.

With the engine running I moved the magneto in and out thinking this should have some effect but it did not change anything.

Also nothing was done in the governor before or after.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Try prying the tube up that runs from the carburetor to the governor at the governor. The tube will wear and drop down a little and the engine won't idle down.

I had this happen on my H. High idle and a miss. I noticed when I pulled the muffler to take the hood off that the exhaust pipe was moving. Further checking showed the entire manifold was moving with the pipe. All I had to do was tighten up the manifold and readjust the carb. If your gasket is an old one you may have to replace it. Ran like a charm after tightening and idles so slow you can read the letters on the fan belt! (just don"t run it like that for long as it is also not pumping much oil at that speed)

Make sure the tooth in the governor shaft is correctly installed in the slot in the throttle shaft in the carburetor. It needs to be for the engine to slow down correctly. Also you can try adjusting the speed screw, with the tractor running, turn the screw all the way out, push the throttle all the way forward (slow) and screw in the screw to the speed you would like it to run when the throttle is down.

This might be stupid, but sometimes I have a hard time lining up the carb with the little tab on the throttle shaft out of the gov. Don't know what would happen if it was wrong.

Had the same problem, found intake gasket was leaking, other than the other two things, one should take care of it

Two things I would check, 1st. idle screw on carb, 2nd could be the carb butterfly accuated by the govenor is sticking.

I had the same problem with my 1940 H after having the head reworked and new head gasket. Someone on here told me to marry the throttle and governor back together. Instructions are in the owners manual. I had no problems after this, Ildes very slow.

I have propaned the areas for vacuum leaks seems ok.The governor tab is in the slot on carb.I also removed the throttle linkage so I could move the lever coming out of the governor no change.
The one thing is when I move the magneto back and forth shouldnt there be some sort of change in the engine because of timing.Nothing changes to the motor.
