I am not getting a charge indications on the gage. I have checked the battery before and during running and it appears to be charging. 6.12 volts before and 6.25 volts running. what could be going on? any help is appreciated.

Based on such a small increase in the battery voltage unless the battery is fully charged I think the genny is awful weak. The voltages with a good meter n battery should be more like 6.3 setting then rise to 6.5 to 7 at RPM under a good working genny. The dead grounding of the FLD post like Jim mentioned should force the genny to its max charge capability (if the genny has a good ground) so see what happens then..... ..... ..

If not run through my Troubleshooting Procedure for a pretty good diagnosis.

Simple test.
Start the tractor and run at 1/2 throttle.
Use a jumper wire or test lead to ground the small "F" terminal on the generator. Go to a good ground. If it now shows a good charge, the regulator probably needs to be replaced (or points cleaned in it with 240 paper). If it does not I suggest using John T's charging System diagnosis procedure. Use the search for box and put in John T charging system. JimN

I performed the test you suggested, the meter showed a charge. since the points are new I guess the voltage regulator is bad.

He meant the points in the V/R not the points in the distributor. I don't think you can buy replacement new points for a V/R. I've bought three good running letter series in the past three years. The V/R was bad on all of them.

Ive heard em called both or even worse things lol. They are indeed the relays "contacts" but they do consist of a set of "points" that close to conduct current. Anywho,,,,,If its a VR system and it charges if you dead ground the gennys FLD post but NOT otherwise, its EITHER a bad VR,,,,, ,,or the VR isnt well grounded (try a ground jumper wire to the VR n see if she charges then),,,,, ,or the wires bad from the gennys FLD post to the VR's FLD terminal...
