How about the opposite: 300 engine on H rear

Scanned the thread about the gentleman wanting to put the 300 rear on an H and all the potential problems with that, My question is would there be any major challenges to putting a 300 engine in front of an H rear?

I know where there's a 300 (or was it a 350?, will have to look again) with a good engine but the rear end is ruined from sitting with water in it. Would the clutch from an H bolt onto a 300 or 350 flywheel or could you use the same clutch and simply ignore the IPTO drive part of it? Another way of asking, are the transmission input shaft splines different?

If the 300's live hydraulics are working, don't bother swapping out the front cover. Plumb 'em up. Pull the drive link to the belly pump and use it for the reservoir.

Yep, those distributor drive live hydraulics are nice to have. And here is how to plumb your belly pump to use as a reservoir:

Thanks guys for all the good info!

It's good to hear how you worked through this same swap. Sounds like it won't be too much hassle.

Been there doing that... sort of.

I've been putting a 300U C169 engine in an I-4.

I used the entire I-4 back plate, flywheel clutch, and input shaft package with the 300 motor.

To mount the engine, I had to use the I-4 front accessory drive and cover, thats where the problems came in. 300U used 1/2 dowel pins (I-4, none) and larger 1/2 bolts (I-4, 3/8) in the face of the block. I had to step down the bolt holes in the block, drill the dowell holes in the acessory drive plate and shave the dowell pins flush with the plate. The 300U's magneto drive had a slightly different bolt pattern requiring me to use the I-4's.

Outside of needing the older I-4 front cover for its engine mount, it was all straight forward.

I'm assuming the H/300/350 is the same as the M/MTA/400/450 and tell you this: I put an M engine in a Super MTA, just changed the flywheel and front cover.

If you wanted to put a 300/350 engine in an H all you should need to do is put the H flywheel/clutch on the new engine.

Same thing to put an H engine in a 300/350 - just change the flywheel and front cover over to whatever goes with the tractor.

I put a 300 with 350 pistons & sleeves in my H. Used the flywheel from the 300 (had to drive the starter ring gear to the back edge of the flywheel so the starter drive would fully engage, you can measure this) put in a new super h clutch, pressure plate, and pilot bearing, (the 300 bearing is different). The H & super H clutch and flywheel will work but super h and 300 are 10 1/2", H is 10", the late H may also be 10 1/2"(if you are going to pull it hard I would go with the 10 1/2".

You will need the air cleaner and the pipe to the carburator from a super H, the h pipe is to small to fit the 300 carburator. There is no fitting in the back of the 300 head to connect with the air cleaner inlet pipe, it vents through the valve cover. A couple of fittings and a hose will fix this.

Use the fan off of the H, 300 fan is to large in diameter, 300 water pump works.

I may have forgotten something but don't think so. My e-mail is open if you need anything else. Dave

Good advice Dave, only a couple of things come to mind you forgot. Throttle control arm on the governor, switch to the H type. Also if not using a live hydraulic pump a later or super distributor drive housing to fit front cover, unless replacing a late enough H engine. If the C169 or C175 is from a utility more is involved.

Yep, forgot about the governor arm and also the H choke rod will work. The choke on the 300 carb is to the engine side of the carburator, ya just need to bend it to fit.

After thinking about it a bit. There was a 10 inch and 10 1/2 inch clutch used in H's. All 300 and 350's used the 10 1/2 inch, So there may be a difference in the shaft, but not sure. Someone else will know. Even so, your clutch from the H will work on the 300 engine, so it won't be a prob;em. Seems I left out the SH engine C-164. Anywho the engine will work in your H.

Any of the C-152/C-169 or C-175 engines will work in either of those tractors. Don't remember right off, but I think the cluthes and flywheel will work too. The engine clutch has nothing to do with the TA. All TA components are in the center section between the bell housing and rear end housing.
