My cousin is looking for a set of main bearings for his Farmall MD. He would prefer something about .002 oversize but will get .010 oversize and have the crank ground. He told me it is impossible to get and I know I have seen them just cannot remember where off hand. Bates Co. has them but only in .03 oversize and that is too much. I looked on YT and could not find any engine parts for the MD.

i have read everyones comments so i have to wonder why it was so cheap for me as i got a complete overhaul kit basically thru the ih dealer. you don't get a kit but everything to rebuild and looking at my receipts it comes to a little over $1600 for a md. thats pistons, rings bearings, gaskets, pins, ect. the head was extra as i had a machine shop do it but still i ordered the valves and such thru the ih dealer. this happened this last year
sincerely,
tim

I am going to have to talk with my IH dealer. I am sure he told me 2200+ for the complete kit. He is an IH dealer. It was for a 450D, but it shouldn't be that much difference. Maybe that was for the 350D he priced at 2200 instead of the 450D.

IH dealers can't get kits anymore but they can get the parts to make a kit. that's the way it was told to me. the one thing that did shock me thou was the valves for the heads came from china and i had to wait for 2 months to get the exhaust ones.
sincerly,
tim

I am aware of that, but all the parts is a kit to me. When he figured all the parts for me he came up to 2200 plus. Like I say, I may be mistaken, but I think that is what he told me last spring. I am just running like it was. Didn't really need an overhaul yet. Pretty good policy, sale our scrap to China, then buy it back plus shipping. Sad state of affairs.

I have a set of new .002" main bearings for a SM-TA gas engine. I do not know if the diesel bearings are the same or not.
E-mail is open.

No they are not. MD has 5 bearings where as the gas has 3. Journal diameter is quit a bit different as well.

I have not seen the crank nor have I measured it. I spoke to him tuesday evening at our grandmothers funeral. I am a machinist and can measure it myself. I would do .010" UNDERSIZE if it were mine. When I rebuilt my engine I went thru Berkshire Impl. and I was pleased with the results. Sorry about the undersize and oversize thing, it has been a rough week. I was thinking bigger bearing means oversize LOL

Guess we all know what you mean. Try Frank at Joe's Farmall Parts. joefarmall@hotmail.com. Nearly always got the bits I wanted. Like El Toro said get it checked out cos I don't know anyone who can guess what is needed. Ss far as I know the smallest made was .003.If you already measured it then I apologise. MTF

PS: They're in IL and you can email them at wtw@weberstractorworks.com

No rod inserts listed in that size.

Knew a kid one time in Omaha that put in .002" undersize "just to allow for wear".

Lasted 16 miles. :>)

Im sorry i dont know a good source for them. but i was wondering whyyyyy are they sooo expensive??? I was looking at parts prices for a Super MD i may get and WOW there really out there!?!??! I know there are two more mains in the diesel but heck the sets are like 5 times ++ for the gas version. are they better quailty bearings to take the more torque. better matterial perhaps?

Andrew

They are expensive because folks are buying them. Lots of MD's/ SMD/400D and 450 D's being rebuilt. Can put 5 grand in one those engines. I priced a complete kit from my discount guy, and it was 2300 bucks for everything. Throw in close to 1000 for head work and another 1000 for injection pump and injector service, plus any other machine work and you get mighty close to that 5 grand figure.

Have you had the shaft measured by your local auto machine shop? Then you will know the exact size of undersize bearings thats needed. They may able to get the correct bearings too. Hal

Bearings aren't even made in oversizes that I'm aware of. Pistons, liners, rings and wristpins yes, but not bearings.

Is this something new?

welll, if ya cut .010 off the crank, the bearing 'd be a lil thicker to take up the slack. lol. i knew what he meant.

Yes, which makes it undersized.

Never heard of anyone putting in a fatter crank, but guess it is certainly possible. :>)

It is very easy to put a crank with oversize journals in an M gasser, just use a Super M crankshaft. They are .050 larger than an M. Just use bearings for the Super and it will fit right in.
