Steering issues

I have an International Harvester 350 Utility TLB

I was doing some dirt work this weekend and started having some serious issues with the steering. I was having trouble getting the wheel to turn left .
It was muddy and the tractor was sliding around quite a bit.
When I got back on the tractor yesterday the right side was unresponsive to the steering wheel.
As I worked with it some, I could turn the steering wheel hard to the left then while pressing on the steering linkage get the right tire to start to grab.

I am going to have to take the steering box apart and see if I have broke a gear or if it just slipped the alignment ( hopefully the latter).

This is a late 50's tractor. It does not have power-steering.
Using the loader is a chore w/o power-steering

Is this something major?
Is it something that can be prevented in the future?

Has anyone ever converted one of these to power steering?

I am not sure about parts availability unless some one is parting one out.

Does anyone know of some sort of a conversion using parts off a junk yard vehicle?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Thanks for the info.
Not thrilled that this steering issue could be terminal. I have only had the machine for a short time, everything has been greased well and moved easily til this weekend.
It is in the steering box ..... I just haven't opened it yet. The pics in the manual are not as explicit as I'd like....
I guess I am just going to have to go get dirty and find out what it is.
Thanks for the input

It sounds like a broken tooth on the sector gear. I have the same problem with my 350 Utility. I just purchased this tractor and it had other issues that were easily fixed, them I discovered the steering problem. Mine is power steering, I think the part is the same for manual or power. Used parts are out there but pricey.

Someone posted on here that they make an aftermarket complete power steering unit for these tractors, again pricey.

I am going to try to build up a new tooth by welding.

Tom , Thanks for the reply.....
I can't give up the tractor not yet .....
I still have a lot of work to do!!!!! !!!!! !!!
I will tear into the steering box and see what I can find. I actually looked into buying a donor with P/S to fix this. I like the idea about building up with weld.
Good luck with yours I will keep you posted
Mike

I sure wouldn't give up on it. There are lots of salvage yards that will have parts. I saw the power steering parts on ebay a couple days ago. If you are sure it isn't the spindles that only leaves the steering box. It will be woth the time to tear into it and see what you find.

VaMike:
What Georgeky tells you is true. Although I have not had personal hands-on experience with 300, 330 and 350 utilities, all the stories are about the same, to wit: The steering systems wear out and there are no parts to replace with. I like them, but will not seriously consider one because of the worn steering reputation and the lack of parts for them.
Somebody who knows these utilities should study what wears on the steering systems and start making those parts again. O.E.M. for example. Meantime, unfortunately, it seems you might have to junk-out your tractor, unless you are very lucky in finding some good used parts. mike

Maybe the front spindles are locking up from lack of grease in the past. I have had wagon gears and truck King pins do the same. The power steering is hard to come by for the utilities as the entire steering unit is different. As far as I know most all steering parts for the utility models are no longer available from IH. Gp to CaseIH.com and search 350. Parts breakdown is there.
