Farmall M Hood holes

I have a Farmall M hood. I have 3 holes and i am not sure if they are all original. I don"t know what hole number 1 is for. Hole nuymber 2 is a hood hold down bolt. The third is the grease fitting for the steering shaft. But what is number 1 for. The numbers are a little hard to read but it starts with 1 and goes down.

like dave slater advises that hole is for greasing the u-joint. without looking in the parts book i don't know when they stopped useing the u-joint that had a zerk on the side. on '39 hoods there were only two holes. they didn't have the nice washer and wingnut hold down.

Looks like the photograph has been reversed. The opening for the throttle rod is on the right and teh zerk access hole is on the left, so it"s a gas hood.

The pic is reversed and the extra large hole would be for the gas tank either for a MD or a dual fuel engine. The muffler and air cleaner are one one side and the hole across from the air cleaner would be for the gas tank for starting until engine is switched for diesel or distillate.

It is off an M gas. I was just wondering if any of them need to be welded up.

Some came with the extra hole in the hood because the universal joint was greasable. I remember a round hole. Can't tell from picture if hole is original shape, but it probably came with a hole there. I did know about what year the hole was elimanated but drawling a blank on trying to remember now.

The tractor may have come with, or someone replaced the U-joint with a greasable u-joint on the steering shaft... that's my best guess.

Think the # 1 your referring to was for some original type steering shaft universal joint greasing.

I'm not an "M" expert, but I think that hood looks like it goes on an MD. It looks like the exhaust comes out the right side of the engine, Like an M Diesel.
