Brando: I have nothing against beer, now I wont speak for the rest. I really don't care for beer, bit of a rum and coke guy, myself. I think you'll find, we sensed you were having good time with this old tractor. We wanted in on the action.

It is obvious smeone built this tractor using part of a C and parts of a Super C. The grill is Super C, I'll bet it has a water pump, and it looks like C from the clutch housing back. What better way to have a bit of enjoyment with you than to suggest the builder may have left a beer san or two in the clutch housing. Keep on enjoying your tractor.

I think they used generators clear up through most of the '06 series as well. The very last '06s had alternators, and the '56 series all had alternators.

Generators were used on Cubs up through the mid '70s.

Nat: My 656 had a 12 volt generator, but then it was 67, the last year with the 06 grill. It was a spring of 67 tractor. Your probably right on last of 06's having alternators. The 140 had a generator until serial number 57723 sometime late 75.

Brando: After reveiwing all this discussion and taking a serious second look, remembering Billy pointed out the beer in hand, I've decided you had a few too many beer and bolted the front half of a Super C to the back half of a C. You'll probably find two empty beer cans in the clutch housing.

Hugh, I just think it has the wrong grill on it. Look how it is mashed up, and how low the gas tank appears to be.

The book FARMALL Letter Series Tractors by Fay and Kraushaar gives pretty good info on the differences among the various IH tractors, from 1939 up through the Super series. There aren't as many pictures of details as you might like, but certainly enough info to make a determination. There is good info on serial numbers and how to read them.
No personal experience with the C series, but from everything that can be seen in the picture, this is a C, with perhaps some mods, as others have said here. It appears that an alternator replaces the original generator. As best I can tell, generators were used all the way through the Super series.

Generators were used long after the super series. All numbered series through 450 used generators as well. Don't know about the 460/560, but I bet they did too.

Farmall C. The band brakes and the straight brake pedals give it away.

Looks to be missing the toolbox under the seat. You should be sitting much higher than that.

It's definitely a C, though. No space under the gas tank. Look at the serial number. If it's 5 digits, it's a C. Over 100,000 is a Super C.

Can't really see the brakes, but if it has disk it is a Super C, if it has bands it is a C. Also, it will drive better if you turn the front wheel around. The caster is supposed to be to the rear.

I just compared the grills on my C and Super C. This has a Super C grill on it. On a C there is no space from the top of the hand crank hole and the bottom slot in the grill. Randy

It looks to be a C, isn't there an emblem on the side of the hood? Hal

Hal, that emblem (decal) is in the wrong place, so it really means little or nothing. Should be on the hood and not on the side of the grill. What made me wonder if it was a Super C, is the space between the crank hole and the first (bottom) bar of the grill opening. It has the taller grill - like the Super A-1 and the Super C. If it were a regular C grill, the crank hole would be almost into the bottom of the grill opening, like the A's and Super A's. mike

Brando: I'm calling it a Farmall C, gas tank about 3/4" above hydraulic unit, Super C tank would be 2-1/2" above the hydraulic unit. Although pedal and brake aren't clear in photo they look like C.

Hugh, that fuzzy brake cover and clutch pedal was what I thought was for a C. Hard to make it out though.

George: The whole photo is not quite clear enough to be certain. That was the reason I gave him the measurment for distance between fuel tank and hydraulics for both. That doesn't show well in photo either. When I said C, I based it on position of hood and fuel tank in relation to the touch control rockshafts. I think Brando will have to confirm those fuel tank position figures or post a clearer photo for any of us to call it and be 100% certain.

Hugh, I am pretty sure I can see the brake linkage from shaft to pivot shaft, which would be for a C as the disk brakes for SC have the rod going straight into the drum. Like you say, just isn't clear enough to see well.

just says plain C on the grill, but since that isn't in the correct place, someone could have screwed up.

Where is that Brandon? Looks somewhere west to southwest.

"C" or "Super C"? How can you tell? Looks like the taller SC grill to me - but I am no C/SC expert. mike

Mike, it is hard to tell for sure, but looks like it has the straight clutch pedal and band brakes. It is a little fuzzy, so it may not have.
