Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season! I have some questions about Farmall 06 tractors. There's one on a hill near where I live which I'd dearly love to save, but I'd like to get some sort of idea what I am in for. This tractor has been sitting outside for many years without being under any sort of comer from the Michigan weather. Lets us for the sake of discussion assume everything is worst case senario. It has fenders but no side curtains and one fender is not currently on the tractor. I know the engine will need a total rebuild but don't figure it is a big deal since it's an M. But how tricky would finding tin be? Is anyone reproducing tin for Farmall orchard tractors? How rare are these tractors? How many were made? It this tractor worth saving or am I wasting my time? What is a fair price to offer the fellow for it? I don't wish to insult him but don't want to give him very much because this will be a very costly restoration. Thanks for all input!

Joe

I've been trying to find the tin for an O6 for several years. It's very rare, and very expensive. I've seen one set of side curtains and fenders go for $5000 on ebay.

Sirs-

I am very sorry for the confusion. The tractor is a McCormick/International (sorry, I tend to think of all the old IHC as Farmall) 0-6 orchard tractor. It sits on a hill near here and last time I checked was not for sale, but I plan to make another attempt in the spring. How many McCormick/International 0-6 were produced? Are wheels hard to come by? I am probably shooting for the stars and missing but I LOVE the way these tractors look when they are done. I also have a disability, thus my affection for tractors with hand clutches MC/IHC/Farmall didn't make many so that is one reason I like it. Please cary on!

O6 is an orchard tractor, 0 (zero) 6 refers to the 706, 806, 1206, etc.

Agree the owner might think he's got a gem and want about 10 times what the hulk is worth.
If you really, really, really, really LOVE this kind of work, and can get the old bucket for a few hundred, you'll probably have some fun, esp. when you get it running. All these tractors (M and the -6 series) are kinda charming (smooth-running and fairly comfortable considering when they were made--compare them to the F-series and 10-20/15-30 types that preceded them; my spine is probably six inches shorter than it should be after spending 15 or 20 years bouncing around on the old stuff when I was younger). But after spending most of my life thinking I had to save money by fixing everything I could by myself, I have finally gotten off this kick and decided that if I want a nice tractor, I'll pay the going price for a good one or even a beautifully-restored one and drive it instead of banging my knuckles on wrenches and cold, cold iron. I know a guy who has a whole farm yard FULL of restored machines that he has spent years on and loves to display. I admire him, as I admire anybody who has the knowledge and takes pleasure in turning out something beautiful. Go to it, but just be aware that you are going to spent a lot on parts, and maybe also on expensive work done by machines shops. Keep us informed. It'll be fun to follow your progress if you go for it.

Joe, the tractor as it sits is worth its weight in scrap metal, a few hundred dollars at most. The engine is probably siezed, every cavity full of water, tires and rims shot, countless parts rusted away or siezed up, wiring gone...

Unfortunately, the owner probably thinks he has gold. Otherwise the tractor wouldn't be there for you to lust after. Someone would've already picked it up.

It won't hurt to try to buy it, just don't get upset when the farmer wants $3000 for it as it sits there, or won't sell for any price. He's free to ask however much he wants because this is the USA, and he's not obligated to sell it to you.

What you are looking at is a McCormick Deering O-6, to be politically correct. The engine is the same as an M pretty much with only minor differnces, such as the front cover. Tin work, well, it is hard to come by, and at one time someone was making the fender "batwings" but the gentleman has passed away. I have only seen them on ebay once, and I have never heard of, or seen anyone selling them.

Joe: I think you best clarify this one a bit. Around these parts (YT) a Farmall 06 tractor is a 706, 806 or a 1206. What you seem to be talking about is an International 0-6 tractor, nothing Farmall about it. Farmalls were all Internationals but they were also all row crop tractors. So, which is it?

I guess he just meant a McCormick 06, and referred to the engine as being the same as the M which it is I guess. The Farmall 06 threw me a bit. I thought at first he was talking about 1206 or 806 Farmall tractor. I suppose orchard sheet metal may be hard to find in decent shape. Engine parts are available anywhere.

An 06/M/orchard tractor would be a rare bird. Which is it? Can't be an 06 and M or orchard tractor at the same time.
