B-275 starting (not) after long lay up - update

A week ago Jim B and El Toro were good enough to explain how I could check to see if the engine is siezed on the 1960"s British-built IH McCormick that was given to me by my neighbour.

To re-cap: It"s been laid up for five years, the steering"s siezed, the tyres are shredded (so I can"t tow it) and the electrics have been eated by something roughly the size of a badger. I enclose a picture for you all to laugh at.

I followed El Toro"s advice and used a car battery to supply power. I shorted across the starter solenoid and succeeded in a) creating a dull clunk and b) melting my jump leads.

I then tried Jim B"s suggestion and used a pipe wrench on the PTO. The hernia should heal given time.

My question now: having established that the engine doesn"t want to turn over do you guys think it"s worth taking it to an engineer and paying to get the thing fixed? Or should I walk away and send it to the scrap yard?

the b275 at work is like that you have to engage it at the bottom push down fast and hard on it..my first time i thought just pushing it would work but you have to really push on it...ave you tried spining the fan shaft on the one i use we have to turn the fan becuase some teeth on the flywheel are missing

Just because the tires are split does not mean they will not hold air. Squirt a little air in if you have not to confirm they leak. You might be pleasantly surprised, I have been.

The tractor does not look that bad. We've all started with much worse.

Hi Gerard, I believe you said it was a BD144 Diesel engine? Those engines are very hardy.
Re again if it a diesel the starter requires manual depressing of the lever at the bottom of the dash to engage the starter drive in the flywheel. If it dosen't have the lever then someone has replaced the starter with a newer model from a 434 or later. Without the lever depressed the starter motor should just spin freely. As someone else mentioned make sure the starter drive is not stuck in the flywheel. I would pull the glow plugs(record how they are wired in series) and squirt your favourite penetrating oil or GM ATF into the cylinders and let sit for a few days. Still with glow plugs removed, attempted to turn engine by either bumping starter or pipe wrench with 3ft of pipe on handle of wrench. Make sure transmission is in neutral.

Hope was only a pulled muscle and not a hernia!!!

If it were me, I'd locate some old but serviceable tires to get 'er up and towable. I'd pull the plugs if it's a gasser and fill the cylinders with penetrating lubricant or automatic transmission fluid and let it sit for a few weeks to see if the engine will free up.

If this project is seeming a little beyond your abilities you might try contacting your local vintage tractor club to see if someone can help you or there might be someone interested in the entire tractor. Always seems a shame to scrap any decent parts. Also you might want to try removing the starter motor and using a pry bar on the ring gear(or try the PTO again). There are a number of things that might cause the tractor to act like the engine is stuck, such as the starter drive being jammed in the ring gear or being stuck in two gears. Where abouts in the UK are you? You could still try towing it (carefully) if the tyres are toast anyway and if the tractors hard up you'll probably not do any harm. tractorsam
