Looking at it where the spark plug wires are attached a distributor will have the center wire in the cap going to a separate round coil that is about 1/2 the length, and the same diameter as a ketchup squirt bottle. It may have a flange rib around it and be clamped in a metal bracket. The Mag will be a contained unit with the center wire going to a built in greyish black top on the unit. The mag will make spark with all wires disconnected from it, and never gets any power from the electrical system. (It makes its own) The distributor system might also be a Delco after market replacement that has a right angle drive with the cap pointing upward. (no mag looks like that)
Some mags have been converted to be used as a coil system (and work OK) they have a coil as described above, and the unused built in coil on the top of the Mag. All coil systems need power through an ignition switch. All mags are grounded to stop with a similar looking, but very different switch. JimN

The bottom photo is of an IH "corporate" distributor. The Delco's were 90º units... the distributor shaft was vertical.

You need battery voltage for a distributor that's fed from an ignition switch to the ignition coil and then to the points.

A magneto does not need battery voltage since the magnets in the mag creates the hot spark when they pass by the coil. Mags don't need a fully charged battery if you can hand crank the tractor.
