I seen an M&W governor sell on ebay for around $300. I knew I had one and thought I would sell it also, but I only have a carb with an M&W tube on it. What is in the governor housing that makes it so valued, and how do you check it? Is the tube of value? Thanks for your input. Now if I could just remember where the governor is at. Lee

I have one, I beat up on other SMTA"s, SM"s, M"s, and sometimes even the 400/450"s. It must be doing something as I haven"t touched it and I KNOW my father in law never touched it.

As for their value, to the guy on the bottom. If there is someone reproducing them why would that make the price go up? I would think with a greater supply the price would go down. Especially for pullers who just want it to work not be period appropriate.

The M&W's have 4 weights instead of 2. If installed and set up properly, they change the whole nature of the tractor. There are fellows who say that the 2 weight governors can be made to work as well as the 4 weights. I've drilled out the pins and replaced springs which made them work better, but never up to par with the aftermarket ones. For a parade tractor, probably not worth the extra money to me. For one that has to earn a living, well worth it.

They sold some with 2 solid weights at one time also but the weight pins were retained different than IH.

If I remember correctly, the weights are made from laminated steel plates and are precisely matched. I also think there are four weights as opposed to two. The vertical linkage uses Heim joints. Can't remember what is special about the horizontal linkage and housing.

The high price is due to the fact that the M&W governor is being reproduced by another company. Ten years ago that governor was being sold for $400. Back when I had more cash than brains, I bought one. I don't think it made any difference but then I am not a farmer.
