Guess I get the idiot award for the day. While attempting remove a sleeve from the block of my H I chipped a piece of cast iron off the bottom of the cylinder wall. Can I pretend that everything is OK or do I start looking for another block? The broken piece is approx. one half inch thick and does not involve the entire bottom of the cylinder wall. Any suggestions?

The piston rings are going to ride on the inside of the sleeve so if it hasn't hit the water jacket then you are ok. It would be more of a concern with a sleeveless block.

I also dont think it will be a problem if it is not large enough to reach up to where the rings bear. I might take a fine file and just dress down the rough exposed edge.

Good luck, Gene

I agree with Allan, if it's not in the water jacket area you will be fine.

FWIW our F12 engine came apart with about a 2" by 1" chunk missing from the bottom of a sleeve. It was big enough that the rings almost came down past it. Had been running that way for many years and someone knew about it because the chunk was not in the pan.

Allan is very correct. The bottom of the spigot that protrudes down into the crankcase is not important to the operation or life of the engine. If it is not into the water jacket, ignore it and chalk it up to the category of interesting hind sight. If it is in the water jacket, then it is an issue best dealt with a new block. It might be possible to weld it up then machine in a repair sleeve then bore it to fit the regular thin sleeve, but that is a long row to hoe. JimN

I'd ignore it if it is down below the "ride" area of the piston.

On our prints that is Distance "Z" or the ride area. That is where the diameter is gaged, roundness and surface finish is determined. The space below that is just clearance.

There are welding shops that can weld up cast blocks, I'd check with your local NAPA dealer or Case/IH Shop or ask around, I'd bet you will find someone that can do the job
