The labeling is the confusing part. A 6v coil and a 12 external resister are the same thing. The explaination you are leaving out is that the points don;t like 12v, It causes arcing and early point failure. Points work best at 6 volts, 12 volt systems generally use a step down (ceramic) resister to lower it to 6volts. This works out good, in that they can sidstep the resister to feed 12v to the coil during the start mode for a hotter spark, the drop back to 6 volts for the run phase. (so you don;t burn up the points) internal resister coils can not do this. Even though you run 12volts in they step it down internally and run 6 volts in all the time and therefore do not start as easily.

Pat: Just speaking from personal experience, take Bob's advice go and get that true 12 volt coil. It will save you from uttering four letter words.

i'm in the same boat as you for converting our machines. with lack of a shop/garage, welder, welding experience, etc.; i am very limited in the fabrication department. the electrical side usually scares the average person, but for me it's the fabrication. i think i could do the electrical in my sleep if i had to lol. many of the pre made brackets are not worth the price either, hope this one was.

thanks for sharing your find,

karl f

Then you have to get one with an internal resistor or use an external ballast resistor.

But, there is some confusion about this. IF you can find a true 12 volt coil, you "may" not need the resistor. I have a 460 with a factory 12 volt system. It used a coil with a ballast resistor. In trying to get it started after an overhaul, I fried the coil due to sutpidity. I replaced the coil with a 12 volt coil with an internal resistor. Many articles in the archives about this. I have yet to hear a satisfactory explanation that I understand. All coils are not created equal, you have to know what you are buying.

A "6-Volt" coil, and a "12-Volt" coil that is marked "use WITH external resistor" are more or less the same thing.

MOST TRUE 12-Volt coils have more primary windings, and are able to operate properly on a 12-Volt system with NO external resistor.

NAPA coil part number 14SB is ONE example of a TRUE 12-Volt coil.

Bulbs and a resistor for the coil. Be sure you get an alternator that will fit. With some full size alternators there is zero clearance between the hood and the alternator. Perhaps that bracket takes care of that, I don't know.
