I have acquired a mower with the IH stamp and #s M2590 stamped on it. My son and I want to restore it. Does anyone know where I can find some info on this mower. Everywhere I punch in these #s it comes up empty. Thanks Dean

I'll try to get some this weekend. I found a No. 9 on top of the tool box lid. would that be the model?

Yes, that would be a model number.

I pulled a real old one out of a neighbors fence row a few years back. It was either a No4 or a big 4, not sure now, but the guy I sold it to said it was made in the late 1800s. There were several different models made like the No6 and Big 6 and others.I suspect the number you found may be a part number. My old mower had an IHC logo on it not just an IH logo. If it wasn"t converted to tractor pulled it may have a second set of small steel wheels on the tounge to take the weight off the horses. Check those numbers again and if the numbers are different on different parts they are part numbers. On my mower the model was cast on the axle or gear box if I remember right. Years ago there were many different types of horsedrawn mowers. The strangest I ever saw was a cemetary mower and was a little bitty thing made to fit between headstones.

Send me an e-mail address and I will send you a scan of two No. 9 mowers, one for horses and one for tractors. My brochure is probably from about 1948 (there is a Super A in the booklet, but the other tractors are H amd M). The No. 9 "Tractor Trailer Mower" has heavier drive wheels than the horse-drawn mower and is geared for tractor speeds. The "steering pole hitch" (that's "tongue" in the old days) has a crank to allow the mower to be offset behind a tractor-mounted mower.
Horse-drawn equipment cannot be driven at "tractor speeds" (say 4 mph) because they are geared for "horse speeds" (probably about 2 mph).
We used a horse-drawn hay rake for years, but if you tried to go too fast, you felt like it was going to fly apart.

Thanks for the reply. I found a NO. 9 on the top of the tool box lid. The man I got this one from had set it on top of a large stump. This kept it off the ground and all the wheels and gear boxes turn. It looks like there was a chain running from the sickle head over to a gear box on the opposite side that is missing the middle section. There is a blade in it and even a couple of extra teeth and one guard in the tool box.

Yep, No9 is the model. I would get on ebay and start hunting manuals or parts books for it.
