I have a 706 that recently started missing. I would like to do a tune up, but had some questions. It is a recently new tractor & also kind of smokes a little. The plugs that are in it now are Champion D16. I have looked at past posts & did not find anything on D16's. I did notice that other's have used Champion D15y, D18 & D21. Are there any recommendations on what I should replace the D16's with?

The D16 plug number was replaced D15Y about 40 years ago. They are one heat range colder but have an extended tip to get the spark farther in the compression chamber. D18Y was recommended for light duty. When leaded gasoline was no longer available the recommended plug was changed to D18Y for regular service and D21 for light duty. Do not use D21 plugs if you are going to be using the tractor for heavy use. The will be too hot and can lead to engine damage from preignition.

I can second the Autolite 388. I was running Champion D21 in my 806 at first but they would foul real easy. I have been running the 388's now for several years with no problems.

Autolite 388. The equivalent of Champion D-21, but better.
