no luck with farmall H ignition

Few days ago, got lots of help on ignition problems. I used the 12v conversion chart and fired right up. Would'nt turn off! Seems I put the coil and alternater #1 field wires on same side of the push/pull switch, oops. I corrected that and then hit starter. I got just a bit more than a "click". It turned the a fraction and then nothing. Cleaned every post from battery to the starter motor. I did note that the post on the starter does want to spin on the housing.

Did I just loose my starter? How would I test only the starter? jump from truck to starter motor and it should spin?

As for the not turning off, was that only because I hade the wires to the +coil and #1 field on alternator to the same side pole on push/pull ignition switch?

I just thought of something else.I was trying to start a motor about a month ago,it would just click.I could not find anything.I turned the motor(460 Ford)thinking it was the starter stuck,nothing,pulled the starter,starter worked good hooked to battery charger.Looked at all the cables,nothing wrong.Put the starter back on,same thing.Put the charger on it for an hour same thing.Changed the battery and it fires up.Overnight the battery went bad I guess.It still had some fire in it but not 12 volts,maybe 9.If you do have a voltmeter thats nice to be able to see your volts at a glance at a gauge,just an idea,maybe try another battery if you have one.

What the switch does is allow electricity to get from the battery to the coil when the switch is on.So you could run a wire from the side of the battery thats not hooked to ground to the side of the coil thats not hooked to the distributer,and it would bypass the switch and run.You would need to unhook it when it stopped running or it could burn the points. Now it could be that the starter is hung up like others said,rock it in gear till fan moves or take it loose.Or pull it. If you have a test light hook it up on the switch on the terminal that goes to the coil turn the switch on and see if the test light lights up,if its already lit up before you turn the switch on,take wires off of the other side until it goes out.If it goes out and you still have a wire on that side,maybe you just need to put them on the other side.What you want is the test light to light up when the switch is on and go off when the switch is off.If you only have one wire on each side of the switch to start with it gets more complicated.What you have to figure out is if there is a wire that somehow is getting juice to the coil from the battery without going thru the switch first. Anyway the side of the coil thats not hooked to the distributer needs to have juice on it with the switch on,and no juice when the switch is off. Maybe just get that circuit working first,then try and figure out the alternator,lights,whatever else you have,ammeter,voltmeter.

Here is a diagram of the ignition system parts.
The starter is only likely to be stuck. Unstick as described in the other posts. If the lights do not dim when the starter rod/lever is actuated, the starter lead described as loose may be broken. Good luck, and let us know the outcomes. JimN

It could be that your starter locked up. This is something that happens a couple of times a year to me. The fix is to shut off the ingition switch, put the transmission in 5th gear, grab a rear tire and start rocking till you see the fan blade move. Then try to start it. The other fix is to loosen the starter mount bolts most of the way then grab the starter and jiggle it. Tighten the bolts and try it. Niether fix will prevent the starter from locking up again but both will get you up and running.

I agree with Gene - the starter power terminal has broken free from the heavy conductors inside.

The terminal is a bugger to resolder without the right equipment. However any starter/alternator shop can fix it. Last one I had done cost about $20

Yeah, loose post on the starter is a big No No. You will have to get that fixed. The good news is if you have help you can tow the tractor to start it. On an H you don't need much speed. Use 4th gear unless the wheels want to slide, then use 5th.

Possible the post is loose from the fields as it mite have been a suspect and thats why it was converted to 12v I have seen this in the past. Remove the starter and have it checked as that is a pretty good trick to resolder cause if the post is loose thats a good reason for the failure.
