Motor Stuck on a Super A

I see a Super A posted for sale but the motor is stuck. What are the steps taken to free a stuck motor. Your guidance is appreciated. I am mechanical but do not want to get in over my head.

First remove the sparkplugs. Then with a good lite i use my small mag lite you can see the cylinder walls. If they are rusty there is no use trying to soak and other means. Remove head and get a better look probably will have to remove pan and get sleeves and pistons out all in one. To do that remove the engine then pull the crank then you can get them out as a unit. I just got finished with three blocks.They were so rusted that they needed replacing. They can be pressed out then. I made a heavy t-shaped thingy and with someone holding used a mall and a couple whacks they came out.Then using a portable band saw split the sleeve and got the pistons out to salvage the rods as the rest was junk.

Well lets go from the start and go from there. Question is why is it locked up?? Is it because it has sat for year or is it because some one forgot to put a can over the exhaust?? If its locked up from sitting filling the cylinders with tranny fluid will most likely have it freed up in a week or so. If its from haveing and open exhaust then your probably looking at a complete trier down. Simple was to figure it out is pull the plugs. If they are rusty then most likely a complete rebuild will be needed. But if they look good then a good soaking will probably have it up and running again. BTDT many time and I enjoy bringing one back to life like that. As far as what to pay well I would say $500 tops and thats if it has good tires

Old,All I can say theres not much rust problems in MO., Ive bought parts from out west and very little surface rust.Ive broke 8 tractors loose but soaking didnt help a thing.Burning the cylinders and a 20lb sledge is the only thing that worked,Around here it takes steel to move steel.I was in OK.& Texas and behind ever house theres old cars thats never rusted out.We see a lot of 100 present moister around here

We have big rust problems here in MO. Humidity is around 50% all the time if not a lot higher. I've done the locked up engine thing many times and have only had 2 that I needed to open up and use a hammer or press to get the pistons out. I have one soaking right now that has been locked up for who knows how long and I'll give it till summer to see if it pops loose since its one I'm not worried about getting running right away any how.

Jeff: It could be as simple as putting some penetrating oil in the cylinders for a few days. I could also be so difficult, you have to remove the head and crank and pull the pistons and sleeves as one piece from each cylinder. I have seen them so bad the rust destroyed the block as well.

Nobody knows what is involved until they get into it. Sometimes you can pour a little atf into the cylinders and have the motor freed up in less than a week. Other times, you can work on them for months, pulling the head, beating out the pistons, burning the cylinders, pounding with oak blocks, etc. for what seems like forever. If you are very lucky, you will be motoring in short order. If you are unlucky, you can easily ruin the block and have to start over from scratch. Usually, the job falls somewhere in between. Assume the worst; Hope for the best. mike durhan
