Well I think I am getting real close to start putting back together my "fix the leaks and paint" 43 H. Have the thing torn completely down and in pieces, most everything has been blasted clean.

My questions for everyone is do I replace all the lock washers? And do I put anything on the bolt threads like oil or grease when I start putting the pieces back together? Just was thinking if had to be taken apart again after I am dead it would be easier to take apart

Will try and get more pics uploaded to my website tomorrow.
Randy

Tractor Supply, or a farm equipment dealer will sell hardware by the pound. Grade 8 at TSC are $3.48 a pound, and a pound of lock washers is a LOT of washers...

Hardware stores generally sell washers for so many cents each. A pound of 3/8" lock washers at 9 cents apiece is around $10 a pound! Ridiculous.

You can replace your washers. If would not be a bad idea to replace the bolts either. Go to a Hardware store and you can get what you need very cheap. Some Thread Locker on the threads would be a good idea. Good luck with your H!

Andy.

Go to your local IH dealer of even JD for the new lock washers. For $5 dollars you can buy hundreds of them in all sizes. Never reuse a lock washer!

randy, i agree with the anti seize compound, a lil dab will make the bolts easier to remove if you ever have too. also on the cyl head bolts, use some sealant where they thread into the block, esp the cooling jackets. black silicone, teflon pipe sealant, whatever your flavor.

I don't normally replace the lockwashers (although many times I'd like to) becuase the budget doesn't stretch that far (being a student still) and I don't have that much new hardware to hand. On the other hand I try to avoid putting anything together without a dob of antisieze. I've taken too many frozen things apart to be stingy with it. I'm young enough that there's a pretty good chance I'm going to be taking this stuff apart again and I'm going to make it as easy as possible because we'll all be older by then :) tractorsam

I've been using an anti-seize compound, as recommended to me on this board. Whether you want to or not is up to you. It can get a little messy, but I think years down the road will be worth it. And I would replace the lock washers. No reason not to.

Well Randy after restoring 12+ tractors and repairing countless others,I always use new lock washers and put the bolts on dry-with the exception of headbolts-they get a little touch of black silicone on the threads.
Sounds like your making great progress and I always enjoy the pictures.
Good Luck Randy in Iowa
