I've been looking around for a live pump to add to my M. I've found a few used but notice a considerable difference in appearances. Here's one M&W I found but others listed are quite different. Searching back in these archives, I noticed some are wary of used live hydraulic pumps. Besides turning freely, what do I look for? I'm cautious about Ebay purchases for something I know little about. Anyone know where I could get a reliable used pump for my '50 M?

Contact the seller and ask ???. It appears that he answers those that do. I like a MW pump more so than a IH due to the MW being made of steel. Hi-Lo Equipment 402-564-3415 can rebuild that pump if needed.

The clearance between the tips of the gears, and the housing determine the pumps ability to make pressure. The end plates, and the side housings are wear points. The housings are made from aluminum, or cast iron (less frequent). The housings do not contact the tips of the gear teeth unless the bushings are worn out in the housing. Replacing the bushings does not replace worn away housing. Used pumps are usually pretty expensive (50% of a Manufacturer produced rebuild) Thus the roll of dice. I would buy a pump I either knew was good, or was professionally rebuilt and guaranteed. Putting a unknown pump in a tractor that had a problem to begin with is like a heart transplant from the nursing home. NAH! JimN

I agree it is like rolling a dice on used pumps. but, if you are mechanically inclined at all you can rebuild it if it spins freely. all there is to a pump is gears and o-ring and seals so it is not that hard of a job to fix it.

Yep,

On a used pump, you're rolling the dice.

OK. Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, I can"t afford a new one so I"ll figure something out. Guess I need to get a break-down on one and see what"s involved and if I"m capable.
