I was looking at a an engine for an H today that had a block with an 'O' casting code (which I reckon makes it a 1945) but the head had an 'E' casting code. By my reckoning E corresponds to either before production began in 1939 or after H, 300, 350 production ceased, 1959. Any ideas what this head might be off? Many thanks, tractorsam

Given that there were around 425,000 H's produced, the replacement parts business could have been quite lucrative through the 60's... Actually, when I was looking for an H nobody wanted to sell theirs because they were still using it for dragging the yard, cultivating trees, running the grain auger, etc. Many are still in use, including both of mine!

Sam, my SMDTA has a similar issue. The tractor is a 1954. All MTA's are. The entire tractor has Y and Z codes, which are 53 and 54. The engine head, however has an H code. This stands for either '38 or '62. I don't think Its a 38 because I don't believe IH had the gas start diesel engine in production then yet. 1962 was long after the gas start diesel engine production ceased. I believe it was a replacement head bought from an IH dealer after the year 1962. IH made it, or had it made in 1962, so that is the year that was cast into it. I kind of figured that was the case since the gas start diesels were known for cracking heads because of operator misuse.

In fact IH did continue to improve those heads after tractor prduction ceased for the M series- the replacement business on those parts was brisk. In the early 1960s IH even came out with a new "Tuftrided" head.

The possibility of a replacement head had crossed my mind but I dismissed it thinking that they would have supplied NOS heads and not cast new ones with new dates. Sounds pretty plausible though. Thanks, tractorsam
