Here is the Farmall M that I just bought. It came with a 7ft. sickle mower (#31?) and doesnt run simply because it isn't wired (supposeably). I'll admit, I'm more of a JD guy, but my grandpa grew up on Farmalls and I really don't see much wrong with them.

I've got a lot of questions for you guys;

1. I need a wiring diagram. The tractor came with a wiring harness that the previous owner bought but I need a diagram to make sense of all of it. (I am by far an electrical genious, so please be patient)

2. Any tips on what kind of shop manual to buy? Ive got an owners manual that my grandpa gave me, but I want a good shop manual as well to have as a reference.

Sorry for the long post, I'm sure I'll have more questions as the project progresses. This tractor joins the 1937 JD A I did a year ago.

Thanks for any help

I'm told it is a 1952. Haven't checked it against this list yet though.

How can I tell if it has live PTO & Hydraulics?

Thanks again

It's unable to have an independent PTO. The later Farmall's with IPTO had substantially different transmission and clutch setup. The only way to upgrade is to buy a whole 'nother machine!

On the other hand, it's quite practical to upgrade to live hydraulics. The pump goes between the distributor and the engine front cover. Your's would not have come new with it. Do a search of the forum for converting to live hydraulics and you should find something. Basically, you'll need the pump from a Super M, 400 or 450, a spool valve or valves and a resevoir tank, though I think some have used the old Lift-All resevoir

Also it's quite easy to configure the Lift-All system you already have to operate two way cylinders. A search on that too will get you a lot of info. I've done that and it works well, only it's not a live system, clutch must be out to run the Lift-All pump.

That is a nice looking M! You can get a wiring diagram from Bob M's album. (I've included a link). All the manuals you need are available from Yesterday's Tractors, just click on the "Tractor Manuals" link on the left side of any YTMAG page.

Andy.

Looks like you have the 10 inch beveled rims from an H on there. They will work OK for 13.6x38 , but a set of drop center 11 inch would be better. Sure you can trade even up as both are about in the same supply and demand. If you are going up in tire size then you will need the drop centers.

Looks like you've got a good complete tractor. What year is it?

I've got a mower that appears to be identical to the one you've got pictured. Mine's a 27V, I was able to get a manual for it from Binder Books. Looks like you need a belt for it. I got one from Purvis bearing supply, was about $25 bucks or so. There are two mounting plates that bolt the mower to the drawbar. If you didn't get those in the deal don't worry as they're not hard to make. I made some after looking at the pictures in the manual.
TSC (everyone's favorite "farm" store) has knives and rivets that will work. The pitman arm I got from them that was supposed to fit was too long and I had to cut it down and re-drill the holes. I didn't have one to start with for measuring purposes though. They have guards that will work if you need those. Technically they're not the correct ones (I think they were for a deere) but will bolt on and have new ledger plates. They weren't labeled, but may have come from China, not sure how you feel about that stuff. However, I bought one from IH and it came from Korea! (Also it cost twice as much). IH still sells the ledger plates for a reasonble price if the guard are otherwise good.

I think it's nice to have both Red and Green tractors. The deere sounds nice popping along, but I think you'll appreciate the Farmall once you put it too work. It's good, smooth power and it's nice to have the clutch under foot when you start adding hydraulic levers and trip ropes and things that keep you busy.

But your tractor has fenders, you will make Allan jealous. I think it is a good looking old gal, it has good tires and what appears to be good rims, so, you just got to get it running. Good luck, now you have a real tractor. LOL

At my age, I use the fenders solely as a means of not falling off the tractor. :>(

Welcome aboard!

I chimed in on the thread you've got going about the wiring, so as to your other question, a parts manual can be quite handy for seeing how things are put together, and for getting parts numbers that can be crossed by a CaseIH dealer, and (for a lot of things) by a good counterman at NAPA . . .

Two others I'd recommend. One is the IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual. The other is the I&T Manual #IH-8. They overlap quite a bit, but there's just enough in each one that isn't in the other that I've found them both quite useful in working on both my Farmalls. (One needed a motor job and some odds and ends, the other was a basket case.)

As for sources, the parts and service manuals can probably be had from the sales dept. here on YT. I got mine from binderbooks.com along with (I think) the I&T. They're also on ebay quite a bit.

Good luck and be sure and drop in if you think we can help.
