I saw a little tractor not too far from home today, and couldn't figger out what it is. It was painted orange, but that don't matter. The sheet metal was in good shape. It was smaller than my 140, but not as small as a cub. It had an engine and cylinder head that looked a lot like my 140's (C123), and a new 12v conversion (1 wire alternator). The tires were about the size of my 140's, but the front axle was curved up in the center. The seat was a bench that went across the entire back of the tractor, and was not offset like an A. The shift lever was just like my 140, with no knob. The grille was that diagonal crosshatch stamped metal, just like on some cubs I've seen. The steering arm came out on the lower left, then a piece went forward on the left side, and hooked up to the front. The steering system was nothing like the F14's, F20's, etc..and it's much smaller. I'm sure it's a common one for you experts, I just don't know...How much is it worth..? Should I make an offer..?? Are there parts for them..? gn

Not sure, but it may be painted orange for a reason it sounds like a Allis Chalmers B. The bent front axle, the bench seat, and the grill. Wish I had a scanner to send this picture. But I've been wrong before. Jeff

Hello,
I think you may have seen an Allis Chalmers C. Look at photo ad #29 and see if it looks like what you saw.

From your description, I believe that you saw an Allis Chalmers and what I think was a model B. These are fairly common and they do not demand a very high price ($600 to $1000). They are good cultivating machines and do a decent job with a belly mower. The governor is very responsive and the engine is adequate, not underpowered like the Cub.

Yep by golly, I think you fellas got it pegged. I looked at the photo ad, and it pretty much looked like the tractor I saw. It's really strange that the tag on the left side of the engine gave the specs for plugs and timing, but no I.D as to who made it. Not a mark on who made it anywhere. The thing that threw me was that the fuel tank and hood, and the air cleaner and exhaust looked JUST LIKE a little 140....thanks again..gn

The reason why they look so much alike is that IH ripped off quite a bit of the Allis B configuration from Allis- and payed for it when Allis complained! The only reason IH didn't pay for it at the start was that Allis realized they really had something and played some games with IH.

Guy, your history lesson sounds good. Can you expound a bit more on this one? Fred

You've got most of the story. Allis kind of ambushed IH when the Farmall A and B got into production, and both companies went the rounds. IH hired some private detectives to track downt he original 97 Allis Bs to prove that Allis had sold them more than a year before they applied for the patents in question, which was enver conclusively proved, but it was close. The companies finally settled out of court (they were quite friendly with each other, other than this battle) for $35,000, pretty cheap.
