Farmall M.

Somewhere along the line I picked up a Charlynn power steering unit for this maiden and have been "toying" with the idea of putting it on.

Was looking at it yesterday. The pump "looks like" one of those old Chevy truck pumps in that the resevour is separate from the pump and has a large 6" hose connecting the two.

Everything is there except how in the heck do ya mount the resevour? Was there supposed to be a "strap" of some kind along with the tank?

Governor bracket is on the pump, but just no way to mount the tank.

what ya mean yer manual power steering is getting warn out?! if i was you, i would mount the resevouir on the back of the tractor. like on the right side(from back) on the drawbar somehow. i really don't know but it's a shot in the dark. mine just has the belly pump turned into a resevuior. ans i still have 2-2way hydralic couplers PLUS the power steering and i get along fine.

I've put that type of resevior on two of my M's so far. To mount it you need a piece of steel about 1/8" thick by 1" wide bent into an "L" shape. Short leg of "L" is just long enough to fit under nut on front head stud with hole to match stud diameter. Long leg of "L" fits against side of resevoir with top of leg against flange at top or resevoir. (make the length of this leg whatever you need to locate resevior at height you want. Long leg of "L" bracket is fastened to resevoir with worm gear type hose clamp around resevior and long leg of "L" bracket.

Allan, from reading your posts, you must be liking that old jewel just fine. I keep mine on standby year round. I know when they are needed they will start, and be ready to get after it. If only things were built that well today.

I bet those mud tires on the front really dig in when you put it in 4 wheel drive.

Mine is mounted at the front left of the engine, above and outside of the water pump. There's a bracket that gets bolted down under the headstud at the front of the block. Right now it's just kinda cobbled up there with good old baling wire, but's been hanging in for five years because I was too lazy.

The pump mounts to the governor housing, using the cover plate bolts, witht the reservoir directly above it. Shield the hoses from the manifold! I'll try to get a pic for you.

The noise in the throw-out bearing went away on it's own. Think it just needed to be run.

Also, I kinda suspect that your Grandpa put a new rearend in 'er. Knowing the kinds of use this old tractor must have had up in your country in those hay fields, he just had to have.

There is absolutely not one hint of a peep of noise coming from the gear train. Even with the PTO running. Can't ever remember hearing one this quiet.

Ya didn't fill it full of sawdust, did ya? LOL!

For sure.

That's the rub of the deal. Got to be tucked up high under that hood on the left side where it is hard to get at to fill. There must have been some kind of a "mounting" for the tank tho, I would think.

Just rolling ideas around in my head. Some day would like to put a live pump on it too. If the power steering had it's own dedicated pump, then the live pump wouldn't have to "share" and it would eliminate the need for a priority valve in the process.

Dunno,

Allan

I think that reservoir sits on top of the pump somehow. I've seen a few Hs that had a hole cut in the hood, the reservoir protruded through it. Ugly as heck.

Allan,
What if you took a piece of 2-1/2" PVC pipe about 10" long and two caps for that size. Drill and tap into the side of one cap for a 1/2" pipe plug/vent, and the bottom end of the other cap for a hose barb. Place this on a bracket above the spark plugs, so peeling up the hood would allow filling W/O removal of the muffler, or strain on attitude. Connecting this non pressurized resivoir away from the pump, but a bit higher would be fine. JimN

Anothe option is to find a pump from an older Ford truck, or maybe even a Chevy might work. All self contained, pump and reservoir in one unit.

You 'spose that would work?

It would sure be a neater deal as long as the filler neck would miss that hood.

Pretty darned sure that the "bolt pattern" is the same between the two styles of GM pumps.

Should bolt right up to that mount plate. The only difference is the lines and where they attach. Just betcha it can be done.

That would put the tank down at belt level and easy to fill. Gonna look into that idea. Thanks!

If you try to eliminate the hose and bolt the resevoir directly to the top of the pump you will probably have clearance problems with the fan. Been there done that. I tried to install it that way on the first one I put on. The fan just cleared when I put the resevoir on but the fan blades would flex backwards and hit the resevoir at higher engine speeds. If you have the parts by all means put them on. Power steering on an M makes them handle like a dream. You can steer with one finger.
