Wardner: I never owned a pto mount pulley and gear box, other than my Super A. None of my larger tractors had it. My dad's H had a side pulley as did our 300.

The rear mount pulley my neighbor used was obviously designed for pto mount. I do know those rear mount pullies fit a wide range of tractors. The gear box to fit planetary type IPTO would be different from the gear box for clutch pack IPTO. What I do see is the Clutch type IPTO on 350, 450, 460 and 560 had very similar shape casting to 504, 656, 544, 666, and 686 IPTO with hydraulic clutch pack and 540 rpm. Again the large chassis 06, 56, 26 and 66 with dual shaft IPTO had much the shape casting around the 540 rpm shaft. Note I say look the same, I have never checked part numbers, but I believe it is worth a check on CaseIH catalogue site. That PTO mount gear box could be the same for all 540 IPTO shafts after the 350-450. You may even find such an item as a PTO gear box for a 1,000 rpm IPTO shaft. It would be an easy build for IH, 1,000 rpm would be close to a 1-1 ratio. That was always the down side of 540 pullies, rpm was reduced from engine to 540 at PTO then back up to roughly 1,000 for the pulley.

Hugh,

If you look at my picture from several days ago, you will see that my PTO gearbox is attached to a planetary IPTO. IH offered both the plain cover and the belt pulley cover for that unit.

My PTO pulley will also fit my 504.

I have been looking at my parts books. The 504 book has the gearbox with 28/16 gears (1.75 ratio). My 656 book has 31/16 gears(1.94 ratio). Both illustrations show different adaptors although the 504 book says it is not used.

Yes, it appears that the 656 PTO will fit the 1468. That PTO comes in a "A" and a "B" model. One is 540 RPM and the other is 1000 rpm. If my buyer is willing to install a 540 PTO in his tractor, he may have to make or purchase the adaptor to bolt up the gearbox. He will also need the same adaptor to bolt up the 1000 RPM box. IH did make a 1000 RPM box. It looks the same as the 540 box. One was sold this week on eBay for $760 and it wasn't NOS like mine. The high price is why I am interested in selling my gearbox and pulley. A lesser reason is that the pulley doesn't fit very well on a fast hitch tractor. The wishbone and pulley can hit each other if the operator is not careful.

I think this arrangement less desirable than a genuine 1000 rpm box due to, as you mentioned, heating with prolonged operation. Plus he has the inconvenience of having to live with a 540 shaft in his high powered tractor.

Ya, but he can't find one. He would have bought the one on eBay if he had known. A friend told him about it after the sale. I think his friend is a forum member and saw the picture of my belt pulley.

My pulley could work for him and it may be his last opportunity to get something that meets his needs. If cooling is a problem, he will have to find a way to handle that problem. Icepack???

However, if he retains his 1000 rpm PTO and adapts my 540 gearbox, his tractor will only need to run at half of rated rpm to get 1000 rpm out of the pulley. That probably wouldn't overheat the gearbox and it might deliver enough power to run what he wants. I have no idea what it takes to run a thresher. I suppose size matters.

Thanks for the correspondence. I will tell the buyer to read this thread. It should help him decide what he wants to do.

Wardner: Probably not a thresher in existance that would stand up to much more than 75 hp today. Even then you would probably have trouble finding a threshing crew that could tax more than 50 hp.

My neighbor told me that when he belted up the 656 with 282 diesel, he had just about reached the threshers limit, and that was that last model of big thresher IH built. He told me he had wagons pulled up on each side of thresher feeding house, with 4 of his best men pitching sheaves. As each wagon load finished they were ready for a break. Given the fact that was 41 years ago, our friend is unlikely to overheat the 1468 PTO.

Wardner: Once I got rid of my 540 rpm forage harvester, I rarely used the 540 pto shaft on the 1066. Really had nothing to do with power, most of my other pto equipment didn't require much more than 60 hp, and it was a case of lighter tractors being more manuverable, thus faster and more economical to run. Having said that, he's probably just as well off with 1,000 rpm belt pulley.
