Bought the PS shaft off an M out of a salvage yard years ago. Then, a few weeks ago I got this motor off of ebay.

The motor came with a coupler on it and the two fit together hand in glove.

Are you telling me that this is still "wrong" and that I indeed will have to get that "wobbly" coupler?

Just seems odd to me that it fits so darned well the way it is.???

There's the man!

What tractor did you say that these pictures are taken from? SM?

Thanks,

Allan

The photos are of a SMTA. The hood says only SM, but it does have a TA. I do not know if it was a SMTA originally or not. I think it probably was. It has live hydraulics and a live PTO. It is 12v and the battery is under the seat.

Allen, is that steering on that ol m building your muscles too fast? just think, run that for a year and you can just squeeze that beer can to open it! I know that ol bugger is a beast to steer, but the H steers like a dream without power, I always thought that was strange..... ..... ..... ....

I dunno,

When I was young, I never even noticed it, I guess. Maybe getting spoiled?

I think I wanna do this just so it will keep me busy and the winter will go faster. :>)

Allan, one is all I ever put on, and it was on a SMTA, but it used just what you have there. No wobbly coupler on it, and it worked like a charm.

Another option I seriously considered was to mount the torque motor up by the steering wheel - but that would look "ugly" - then again, it probably wouldn't have mattered on my H...

Here's some things to consider that I have tried. All rear brackets to mount charr lynn unit won't line unit up true with steering shaft. If bracket is modified or one made to line it up and a solid coupling used, it can be hard on the charr lynn unit when solid on both ends because after time the ball bearing on front steering shaft will let shaft travel front to rear a little. Also lining unit up cuts underhood clearance. Problem with splined coupling though is wear and use of pins instead of keys for retaining to shafts. If a mount is made for char lynn unit that will keep it from turning but let it float forward and back just a little, along with a solid keyed coupler (use by putting keyway in shorter front shaft) its real hard to keep it back far enough to keep gauges in the same place and get the unit to clear hood. When I say clear hood, I mean so hood looks the same as before power steering. Also whatever coupler is used can't be to big or it will hit hood. Depending on how much the rear steering shaft clears top of fuel tank, fuel tank mounts can be shimed up to raise tank some and will let you cheat on the hood clearance for unit without being to noticeable. Just pointing out some pros and cons from trying to come up with something better than the overpriced splined coupler in the past.

Did you have one of these for your H?

As for the wobble joint - you need something to allow movement or else ALL of the bearings in the front bolster need to be pretty tight. Putting pressure on the torque motor or pulling on it is sure to cause breakage somewhere down the line.

I know Dad said he broke the casting on his M one time when he had a bale on the loader and cranked it over hard...

Yeah,

On the H I did. Glad I don't have to go thru that dance on the M. That darned thing made me white headed, ya know.

Er, maybe it was those North Dakota women, can't remember. :>)

Boys, I know I'm getting into the middle of a conversation here, but has anyone mentioned the "special" gauge mounting bracket? It seems to me my dad's SM with Charlynn PS had the gauge mounting bracket altered a bit to make everything line up right. Just a thought.

Yeah,

That would be this joker. I've got to get it cleaned up and painted yet, but kinda know how it mounts on the M.

Think this plate and the motor is gonna be a heck of a lot easier to "hang" than the darned H was. Boy, that thing turned out to be half a nightmare. :>(

That's it! I THOUGHT that using this piece and straight couplers that it lined up alright, but don't know for sure. Good luck!

Boy Allan, I dunno. We've got two tractors with solid couplers between the motor and front steering shaft, a Super M and a 400, and both work just fine.

I think Dad had to do something with the angle of the gauge/motor mount. The U joint is on the back side of the center support.

Alan,I just go to the farm store and buy 7/8in bore standard U joint. drill a 5/16 hole thru them and use a roll pin,put a radiator clamp around them for safety. I like this method better because if you do find the splined ball type it will probably be wore out anyway.

I've found the new real mcoy, but they are priced up around $100. I just think that is nothing less than "hand gun" marketing.

I know I haven't got the thing on the tractor yet, but am assuming from what I'm hearing that it isn't a "straight enough shot" to work just coupled together like this?

Allen,

The one on the SMTA I have has u joint like r4etired described and appears to work fine, but hardly any clearance under the hood.
