I can't get my '49 SA engine mated to my engine stand. The upper left arm won't reach to the mounting hole, because it's hitting the lower arm.

Can I get away with using only three?
ANd the bolts are 1/2-inch, from my local do-it center. The original mounting bolts were too short. Will these be strong enough?
My original problem was a slipping clutch. Nothing obviously wrong with the pressure plate, and the clutch plate still has a fair amount of material, and it's not all glopped up with oil. Weak 58 year old springs? Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

Pete,Turn your mounting arm over and raise it higher. Then using a slightly longer bolt and several flat washers mount the arm to the engine. One washer under the bolt head and the others for spacing between the arm and the block.Turning it over will keep the pipe away from the cylinder head.

Turn the upper left mounting bracket end for end to match the upper right bracket than with a heavy washer put mounting bolt in middle of strap. Armand

How about moving the lower arms to the back of the plate and using some spacers and longer bolts?

Could try turning the mounting plate 90 deg.

Just peeking out at the left of the plate is the lower end of the upper left arm.
That is how long ALL of the arms are. And I have to avoid the end of the crankshaft that is sticking out the bottom.

It looks to me like that arm could be brought over to line up with the hole and by using a short piece of tubing and a washer or two and by using a rigid top washer it would then be rock solid. CENTAUR

Nothing in the book says you have to have the plate on the engine stand "horizontal". If you loosen the three brackets that you have attached, and turn the mounting plate on the engine stand 45 degrees you'll find that it will work quite nicely.

I noticed that the mounting plate on your stand is slightly different top and bottom. Did you try flipping the plate?

Why not make a shorter bracket to replace upper left bracket for this engine? Looks to me it just a U-shap strap of steel welded to a piece of pipe. Not hard to make. Armand

I had the same type of problem a couple weeks ago when I was building an Allis C engine and I just used 3 to hold the block. I flipped that engine over 2 or 3 times and it held just fine. Just be sure to watch it close and you should be just fine

It doesn't look to me like it's going anywhere. That is a light engine. As long as you don't exceed the rated capacity of the stand OR worse, put too much weight on the breakable cast "ears" at the bottom, you are probably ok.
