I had wrote a few months ago that i was looking at a Super MD. The trator is 7 to 8 hours away so i have been getting info over the phone on its condition. The one thing that makes me nervus is that he said that it runs real good on the diesel but it wont start on the gas side. I have been doing my homework on this and doesnt seem real hard to get the gas side working again (at least from what i read). But for the asking price i want to see this tractor run before i buy. Sooo my question is there any harm in pulling it to start? I will be going up to look/get it in March soo it will be cold, will it start on the Diesel alone?

Thnaks for the help !!

Andrew

I bought a 600 and it would start on gas and before I unloaded it I had it starting on gas. If you pull start these old diesels you need to get the engine turning over pretty fast to get them to start on diesel. I bought a W450 when the guy couldn't get it to start on gas and then could get it to start on diesel pulling it. I didn't pull it three hundered feet and had it running and drove it home. Put in new plugs and points and plug wires and it and runs great. Used the W450 today on the grinder.

Andrew, I wouldn't get to nervous adout it not running on gas.A common problem that is so simple many people miss it is the hot wire cutout on the manifold. When they go bad you don't have any fire to the coil. Its purpose is to shut down the plugs when you switch it over to diesel. I have seen many that are bypassed by people that didn't understand them. MD's are special.

Andrew,
Shouldn't hurt it pull starting.Has the owner cleaned points etc?
I had a WD6 which I sold to a person in Killingly. He got it running very quickly. It was a rollover. That tractor sounded real sweet when when he ran it for me.He also has a MD.He is very knowledge able about all red tractors and helps me with questions and repairs.Email me if you want his name and number.

More than likely it will. A whiff of ether can make a difference, (many recommend against this) pulling it for hundreds of feet at a speed at least 1/2 High Idle, and with the control to full output will generate enough heat to start it. A plug in heater will also warm it up enough to start by pulling. JimN

Andrew, I have a SMD-TA and I agree, a gas start diesel does give you a warm feeling. I love mine. Great fuel economy, good power, smooth running. There isn't much to the gas side, but I would be a little cautious. Spark plugs are a little pricey for these. About 40 bucks a piece I think. Also, if it needs carburator work, you might want to reconsider. Parts for the F-8 carb are darn near non-existant. If someone knows where they can get them, I'd wish they share it here. I've been looking for awhile with no success. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just sharing what I know, or what I've found out. Good luck with 'er!

Thanks for the kind words. My family owned a TD18 dozer with the Gas start engine. I owned a 1948 MD that was sweet to me. It had been a PTO pumping tractor for irrigation for most of its life. It was stuck from H2O but in a month came loose and ran well. Good Luck with it. JimN
