I finished up putting the head back on my M sun night and fired it up in the garage for a few minutes. Jump forward two days, i put water in it and was gonna back it out of the garage to let it warm up and pull it back in to check the valves. I cleaned up all tools and extra parts, jumped on it and fired it up and started to back up when i realize i never put te steering shart on it!!! Guess i was too excited that it was running again, no harm done but was a little exciting!!

I had an old Dodge Charger POS. I was driving it one day when the bolt holding the steering column to the firewall fell out! (dunno what happened to the other one) The u-joint did'nt come apart so I could still steer, did make me pucker for a sec.

Had the steering on my M come loose a few years back. I was able to get it stopped with no problems, but couldnt find any of the parts that came out, so I lifted the bushhog, put it in reverse, idled it down and drove backwards and steered it with the brakes.

Grandad had an MD that one time, for no apparent reason, had the big cap on the steering gearbox on the front come loose and fall out. Over the course of time (too many turns?) the worm gear and that part of the steering shaft eventually turned itself out far enough that the coupling separated there by the guages and then I was steering air-- luckily I was raking hay in 3rd gear when it happened and got stopped without a problem. In later years I have about killed my self trying to get H and M steering shafts apart at that joint, but I never forgot the one that came apart on its own.

A friend of ours grew up on a M when he was a kid and one day was driving it down a dusty road when all of the sudden the steering wheel fell off! luckily he was somehow able to steer it back to his farm and fix the problem. -David Gode

Steering becomes very important when it is not there when needed. Good thing it was not at speed. I drove a PU about 6 miles without knowing it had no brakes. Excitement was available at a buisy intersection. No accident, but that is thanks to others getting out of the way. JimN

The first job I had after I moved to Iowa 20 years ago was hauling road rock for the county . I worked for a subcontractor with less than road ready trucks I found out . The air brakes worked fine empty but after I got a load ( 14 tons or so ) and was scooting on down the blacktop at 55 I came up on a 'T " intersection . Right or left . I went straight through at speed and the only way I got stopped was by downshifting . I got stopped just short of the end of that section . As you can tell there was no accident because there was a gravel road on the far side and it was not near any towns . I was so pssd !! At myself for not checking them myself and at the owner for letting a truck out that wasn't fit to work . ...Randy
