To old timer in ohio and hugh mckay. Tell some more. I'm gonna fire my shrink. Dead serious and darned funny! When I was 11, thought I knew all a bout cars. My dad had 1950 ford, stick shift parked by New York Central dock. I was explaining to my ma and grandma how to shift gears. Dad come back and ford hood was shaved without ever touchin' a tool. He said it was a good lesson and laughed and cried all the way to the bump shop.

Dave: Usually when one tangles with a train, they don't fare as well as old man Decker. I was at IH dealers one day, spotted a pile of broken casting and twisted sheet metal, looked like a Farmall 340 and a fertilizer spreader. I asked about it and was told the operator accidently pulled out onto crossing in front a train. The train was slowing down for a town where it had to stop. The engineer estimated he was still between 35 and 40 mph when he hit the 340. The tractor operator at the last min. leaped and grabbed a railing around the nose of train engine. He hung on until the train stopped, and at that point dropped to the ground. The story on the tractor operator, now two days later, he was still in hospital, very sore, and had quite a few broken bones mainly ribs. I never met or knew the guy but apparently he was out and going in a month.

Hey there;
Don't know if this helps,but I used to own a 1937 ford,that would jam in 2 gears.I had to carry a heavy,screwdriver,to unstick the trans.One time the trans jammed while I was crossing a 4 line railroad track.Although I'm sure,but I think I set the altime record For unscrewing the top nut(?)Sticking the screw-driver in there to shift into one gear.Oh by the way,did I mention a fast moving train was coming,that engineer was blowing his steam whistle, for all he had.That happened 59 yrs ago.I turn 75 on the 29th. Bob
God Bless

old timer: Not quite the same, but you reminded me of an incident in my home town. This guy had been introduced to cars in his late 50s never really did learn to drive well. He was always a source of conversation amoung all the many folks that had close encounters with him, while driving.

One day while waiting at a railway crossing, parked locomotive right in front of him. He was on a bit of a down grade, somehow let off the brake pedal and his old Dodge slamed into the side of the standing locomotive. Great billows of steam emerged from the locomitive. Well, old man Decker had done it, he put the locomotive out of commission. Ruptured something on the steam lines. The old man drove away in his Dodge. The locomotive sat there for 10 hours, waiting for CNR mechanics to come with necessary parts to get it up and running. This was a spur line about 80 miles out, from the hub of railway activity.

I see this is the same tractor you're trying to sell for $2,000 now still stuck in gear?

You might want to make a big production out of getting the tractor loaded and out of there rather than fixing it in 5 minutes and driving it on the trailer in front of the guy you just stole it from! :shock:
Unless, of course, he's not just getting rid of it because it's stuck in gear...

Randy: For the most part, what Jim and gene are saying works, however I have seen these with enough presure on the gears, it takes more. First problem is your not completely sure which direction of transmission rotation is creating the presure. I only ever struck one this bad, and what we used was an anchor vechicle and a set of come-a-longs. With tractors rear wheels on the ground, tighten the come-a-long between tractor and anchor vehicle. If it doesn't work pulling one direction, then try the other direction. Very rare that it ever becomes this difficult.

Mite need to jack up one rear tire as sometimesdepending how the tractor sits it could be in a bind. I always want the clutch pedal in to help releieve and pressure.

Remove the shifter and line up the slides in neutral with a big screw driver or pry bar.
