I have a retired, certified IH mechanic that is rebuilding the pto assembly on my 340 utility. He told me that the parts I needed to do it correctly are about $500. I want it done right and I know he will do a good job. Am I getting ripped off or are the really that expensive????

The answer to both questions is, yes. Yes, they are really that expensive, and yes you are being ripped off, but not by the mechanic.

Best case the mechanic is seeing a single-digit percentage of the parts cost, but if he's a good guy he's not making a dime on the parts.

Sounds like he will be doing a complete job.All motion parts should be replaced using genuine Case/IH parts. It doesnt take long to get to 350.00+ in just parts using the good stuff(You will never regret it)
Could be a little high but not out of line.

I know he is using Case/IH parts. he wouldn't do it otherwise. I know it will be done correctly and he stands by his work. Hopefully it will never need done again. I'm considering having him do my T.A. next! How much will that hurt?

I have not priced a T/A assembly from IH lately.
They can also be rebuilt with parts purchased thru IH.
Rebuilt units can be purchased from places selling after market parts, catalog retailers and salvage yards-usually starting @500.00 and up plus your core(existing t/a).Ive heard nothing bad about these rebuilds but Im not sure who is rebuilding the units for the retailer perhaps HY-Capacity out of Humboldt Iowa.
However my personal preference is CaseIH-and Im no millionaire, however I have always complained about the price, but praised the product.
The real expense will be the installation of the unit (splitting the tractor).I will let sombody else take that one.I take too much time to do mine

When the PTO on my 560 broke one piece alone was going to cost $300-400 new. I found that piece at a salvage yard for $100, but then we found another broken piece. Luckily i remembered a friend had a 460 sitting in the weeds and I was able to get the complete working PTO for nothing. Lee

Go to messicks.com and find your part numbers and enter them to get prices. Should get you in the ballpark.
