90 lbs on all cylinders give or take a couple. The engine will throw a puff of smoke at start-up but seem to be OK after that. I pulled the valve cover and it was alot cleaner than i would expect for the age of the tractor.
It is my understanding from the archives that the compression should be around 130 lbs.If i need to get into the engine i guess i want to do it right. I am going through this thing pretty well as i know it has not been taken care of as it should. Not a trailer queen but a good looking functional tractor(mostly mowing with woods belly-mower).

The tractor runs fine but if i am going to throw a bunch of time and effort into it only to have to tear into the engine a couple years from now i wont be pleased. Any thoughts?

That is good enough unless you want to make a puller out of it. The big thing is the readings dont show one that has little or none. 90LBS sure aint weak enough to spend money for more

A comprssion test on a cold engine is practically meaningless.

From new, with standard 3 inch flat top pistons, IH only called for 105 lbs compression. It should only have 130 with 3-1/8 high compression pistons. You need to find out what you have in it, but 90 psi would be lower than optimum in any case.

Most As were dual fuel (with a gasoline starting tank, little cap, and a distillate main tank) The compression on one of these is at te 90 pound area. If it is only giving a puff at startup, and runs well without fouling plugs, I would not tear into it at all. If it smokes at idle, and when ideling down from going fast in road gear, I would consider valve guide seals applied without removing the head. JimN

The engine was cold and the throttle at idle position when i did the test.

With the engine warmed up try this: remove all spark plugs and re-do the compression test only squirt some clean engine oil in each cylinder first, crank the engine to spread the oil around, and repeat the compression test. You did have the throttle wide open to allow maximum air entry, didn't you?
If all readings increase 10-2- pounds, this indicates worn rings. With all readings even, the valves are not suspect.
To get a more accurate result, purchase a leak-down tester. It will tell you exactly how much leakage your engine has and where it is leaking.
