I have a 1959 cub and when in gear and moving the trans/rear makes noise 1st and 2nd gear seems to be the loudest. Where do I start looking for the trouble/problem? What do I look for? And what is the best fix. Thanks for any suggestions

Like some others said, I just rebuilt the transmission on my Cub including a new drive shaft and in 1st and 2nd gear there is a definite gear noise. Those spur gears they used in those old tractors are naturally noisy. I have a B that is really noisy in road gear. Roger

I agree with Gene on this. Most likely, the front bearing on the transmission input shaft is worn. Replace it and the seal and it will make things a lot quieter. However, as others said, there will always be some noise.

I have a 55 cub that i had all new brearings , seals ,springs and detent balls installed and it still wines . I tried thicker oils but that just kills the shifting in cold weather . We have found useing full syn 90 weight gear oil works well [ Royal Purple ] . It still makes noise but shifting and smoothness is great. Like everyone else has said this is normal for straight cut gears in a transmission. Drain it out and run some ATF in it for a couple of hours and then put good oil in it. People will debate useing automatic trans fluid in it but it cleans very well and it is fine for your truck. It protects far more advanced transmissions then this cub trans .

They are noisy whiny and loud. If you have just gotten it, and it is a whine not a growling grind, I would ignore it as it is likely normal. They range from a noticeable whine to pretty obnoxious. And run for ever. If it makes raspy grinding noises or the noise is changing as time goes on, I would say a bearing rebuild and possible gears are needed. The forum will help, but a service manual is mandatory. JimN

Dont know about a CUB but i have found out that when i replace the input seal on the tranny i put a new bearing in also as its easy when replacing the seal and it sure makes them quieter than before i also use 150wt lube. This is what i have found out on the A and Bs.Ive done several.

I have never had a Cub without noise in the gears. I think it is due t the "spur" gears in the transmission.

Did you check if there"s still enough oil in there? Best way to check it to drain the oil, remove the cover and just check everything. It could be a broken or worn out bearing, damaged or worn out gear... But when open you could also check the shifting mechanisme, maybe you"ll find your problem there.

Hope I could be of any help,

Kristof
